His father is Irving Friedman, and his mother is Mollie Friedman. He received his primary education from DeWitt Clinton High School and later graduated from there. He then joined the University of Missouri and studied journalism there. He was an excellent student.

Bruce commenced as Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force to serve the nation. When Bruce was 24 years old, he married the model, Ginger Howard. Bruce wrote for many men’s magazine and later became the chief editor of many of them. He had three sons with Ginger, but they separated in 1978. Bruce’s first novel published in 1962. “Stern “proved to be successful and declared as a best-seller. Bruce appeared in “Another Woman” a flick by Woody Allen.

The story is about Marion Post, a professor. She teaches philosophy at the age of 50 and is in her independent world; she is alone and no one to take care. She takes a leave from the university and decides to write a book, but she is disturbed by the noises produced from the construction work in her building. She rents another house where she can continue with her work in peace but is interrupted by a therapist’s office nearby.

She soon starts taking sessions from her and realizes she has lost many things in her life and repents about the decision she took. She promises the therapist that she will change and live every moment of her life. Bruce’s novel includes A Mother’s Kisses, The Dick, and About Harry Towns, etc. His short fictions writing include Black Angels: Stories, Black Humor, Let’s Hear It for a Beautiful Guy, Sexual Pensees, and Three Balconies:Stories and a Novella. Bruce wrote the storyline of the film, 'Doctor Detroit' released in 1983 is about Clifford, who is a geek and a professor at the Monroe College.

Smooth is a pimp and owes Mom (a local gangster) a debt of $80,000. She creates 'Doctor Detroit', a fictional mobster to scare Mom. Clifford meets Smooth and parties with her gang and has the best night of his life. He hears their problem and decides to help them by being Doctor Detroit. Clifford starts living parallel lives, teaches the students and helps his father and on the other hand helps the prostitutes fight against Mom. Bruce other film works include 'Fore Play', 'Stir Crazy', 'The Lonely Guy', etc. Bruce married Patricia J. O'Donohue and had a daughter from her. He is currently in New York with his family.
