Bai Ling is a Chinese-American actor. She was born on 10 October, 1966 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Her father Bai Yuxiang was a musician who then became a music teacher in the People’s Liberation Army and her mother Chen Binbin was a dancer, stage actor and a literature teacher at the Sichuan University. Bai Ling has two siblings, an elder sister Bai Jei and a younger brother Bai Chen. Ling was a very shy child and found that acting and performing was the best way she could express herself. As a child, she loved to perform and learned the art by being a part of various shows in her elementary school. Ling didn’t have a very pleasant childhood, after graduating from middle school she was sent to Shaungliu to do labor work.

Ling graduated high school in 1978 after which she entered the People’s Liberation Army as a performer entertaining soldiers for around three years and also served as a nurse for some time. During her service in the People’s Liberation Army Ling was sexually abused several times and had struggled with alcohol addiction. Later she was taken to a mental hospital for a while. Ling faced all of these struggles before the age of 18. Despite the difficult times she had to go through as a teenager Ling managed to stay strong and developed the courage to move on with her life and believes that her past life provides the artistic talent. After being released from the mental hospital, Ling joined the People’s Art Theatre in Chengdu, she molded herself into a professional actor.

In 1985, Ling got her first role in the movie “On The Beach” as a village girl. After this she was featured in many Chinese movies because she began her career from China and later on acting in movies like the “Suspended Sentence,” “Tears of Suzhou” “Yueyue” but they didn’t get much attention. Ling received many awards for the movie “Red Corner” like the San Diego Film Critics Society Awards recognized Ling as the Best Actress for her performance in “Red Corner”. She was also awarded the Female Discovery of the year by the Gold Apple Awards which gained her a lot of recognition.

In going further in her acting career Ling got the opportunity to work with many prestigious personalities from Hollywood and other film industries on a global level. I don’t know you” (2011), “I love you my Valentine” (2012), “Tuesday night 8 p.m.” (2012). Ling sure did have some deep and dark valleys both in her personal and professional lives, but she did go up some really high peaks which showed that she is a fearless fighter.
