Matthew Radford

Matthew Radford is an English Actor. A native of the United Kingdom, he has lived there for most of his lifetime. He has been performing professionally in films and as a theatre artist in the United Kingdom since 1991. He received his graduate degree in English Literature of the University of Texas, Austin, the capital city of Texas, USA. He carried his love for acting to the States by performing in Austin Shakespeare Festival. In 2005, Matthew went back to Austin to get his Ph.D. in the English Department. He is mainly known for his Shakespearean performances in numerous theatre stages. Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear and Richard III are his most popular performances. Apart from acting, Matthew is also a professional Director.

He is currently an Assistant Professor at Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Virginia. He teaches Master of Fine Arts/Master of Letters in Shakespeare and Performance. Matthew Radford started his theoretical journey in England. He has revealed that his initial years were very tiring, as the wages are very low in English theatre and hence, actors take up full day jobs. After full day’s work, the rehearsals used to happen at night and therefore, it used to be tedious and exhausting. Matthew has revealed that he was happy adopting to the USA style of theatre, where the wages are better, and the love for Shakespeare is profound. One of the added perks of starting from the scratch as a theatre artist was that it taught Matthew to design and make his clothes among the other trivial tasks that are done backstage.

Even after working in Austin for a long time, Mathew hasn’t shifted to the USA and continues to live in England while going travelling from his homeland for work. One of the most active parts of Matthew Radford acting career is theater. Even now, when he is a prominent star in Hollywood and British Cinema, he takes out time to do numerous stage shows. He has made a lot of headlines when he played the lead in the Shakespearean play – King Lear at the famous Winedale stage. In his early years as a Stage Artist, Matthew was a part of the group of Actors from London Stage and used to tour around cities for several stage performances. One of his most rewarding tours started in the year 1999, when he discovered the Winedale stage for the first time.

Apart from the theatre, GMT Greenwich Mean Time (1999), Enchanted April (1991), Revelations (1994) are some of Matthew’s popular movies. Matthew has received several accreditations and awards for his contribution of almost 30 years to the acting circuit. He received the Austin Critics Table Award in the year 2006, for his performance in ASF’s Richard III, where he played the role of Buckingham. Following which, Matthew has won numerous B. Iden Payne and Austin Critics Table Awards.
