The Hong Kong – French movie Vengeance hit the screens in 2009. Vengeance falls into the category of thriller film. Johnnie To directed the movie and Wai Ka-Fai developed the movie’s screenplay. The movie probes into killings, gory violence, and Triads’ impact on the society. There is an ensemble cast in the movie involving actors as Johnny Hallyday and Anthony Wong.
Plot: The plot revolves around Francis Costello done by Johnny Hallyday. Francis is a French hotelier and a former hired killer. A gang of Triads assails his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. The movie unfolds with scenes showing how Francis wreaks vengeance on the attackers. He seeks the help three thugs to accomplish his goal.
The movie’s director has taken care that the action-packed movie does not cross the limits. The action scenes are contained, and do not look absurd. Through restraint, the action performers grasp the attention of viewers. The output is something of vigor and the action scenes have a motto. There is a flaw in the movie that is not very obvious. The climax seems to flounder a bit. But, the movie Vengeance is one of the best action movies of present times. The action scenes make up for the dull story. There is luster in the movie which is not highly distracting. There is a very fine actor in Hallyday. He projects reticent camaraderie and communications are rather silent. Such is the case while sharing food or when under fire by the enemies. There is a streak of sadness in the movie Costello is seen losing all his memory. He has to take photos to identify the person the next time he meets the person. The destitute children hold high regard and affection for him which portray him as a noble entity. The movie Vengeance is one the best works by the director.
Verdict: The movie Vengeance stands out from the stereotyped action movies.
