Plot

Sanjana is a single mother of a five-year-old daughter, Riya. She is a college dropout and finds it difficult to get a job. At this point in her life, Sanjana comes to know a shocking truth about her daughter’s life. Surya, who runs away from a mental asylum is after Sanjana’s daughter. The remainder of the story deals with Sanjana’s struggle to save her daughter’s life alone.

Star performance

This is the first movie of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in a mother’s role. She has performed excellently aiming to connect with the audience with her character’s emotions and experiences. She has impersonated the character as such portraying the frustrations, anger, and unwavering love towards her daughter. The emotions were able to be understood through her expressive eyes and body language as she battled adversity. Mime Gopi as a psychotic character following the child feels genuine in that it evokes discomfort in the audience. It builds tension for the viewers. Ganesh Venkatram portrayed the role of an arrogant husband as a realistic performance. Sashank’s role was convincing, the depiction of a loyal friend in challenging times. All the cast have performed well in their assigned roles.

Analysis

In this movie, Anil Katz portrays the beautiful bond between a mother and her daughter. The narration keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. The screenplay has various elements with many subplots which keep up the interest. Gopi Sundar The precious icon of the Indian music industry, Go >> Read More... ’s music enhances the storyline and several scenes. The music added more emotions to the situation. The cinematography perfectly captures the emotions of the character, it is appreciable. The editing did not meet the expectations, but still, it was done decently.

Sabari showcases the unwavering bond between a mother and child. Being a single parent is not an easy task, and facing struggles to save her daughter’s life is an extraordinary element. It beautifully conveys to the audience that, becoming a single mother is not easy, but love and affection towards the child and courage to face anything will help to live a good life. The character Surya is a mental patient. His mind will struggle to manage emotions, think clearly, or perceive reality accurately. Usually, mental patients are stereotyped, but we don’t know what they are going through. The portrayal of these characters will definitely stick in viewers minds and later it changes the way we approach them. Hence this is a very sensitive characterization.

The first half has interesting moments, but the second half lacks it. There are many subplots and they were arranged in a way that seems unrealistic and artificial. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is shown to have a psychological disorder, and that is not established properly. Hence, one gets a lot of doubts. Some scenes are lengthy and could have been edited and cut short.

What’s there?

  • The brilliant performance of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar can be seen
  • The portrayal of the unwavering bond between a mother and daughter is amazing
  • The cinematography gives the perfect emotions of the movie
  • The music by Gopi Sundar is perfect for the situation and adds flavor to the movie

What’s not there?

  • The twists were predictable
  • Some of the scenes are lengthy and could have been cut short

Verdict

Sabari is a movie for people who love to watch psychological thrillers. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has done a splendid performance. This movie will keep all kinds of audiences entertained throughout. It is a must-watch in theaters.
