“I shall be good because I can’t be bad,” a story of an eccentric, aging Shakespearean actor, who lives on Vodka, and breathes on memories. A captivating reflection of stagecraft and cinema comparatives, through the eyes of a retired actor, portrayed beautifully.

Plot: Harish Mishra, an aging Shakespearean actor, retires and takes leave from the theater and his first and last project, suddenly. His co- worker’s are unaware of his whereabout’s and the reason for his retirement. Popularly known as Harry, who spent precisely 30 years and 9 months, in this field, was immensely passionate about Shakespeare. His belief was that nothing could be ever comparable to Shakespearean plays. Knowing all plays, by heart, he lived in those stories, and his characters.

Strictly against modern cinema, he considered theater as a much higher platform for directors and actors to communicate with their audience. Not only a platform but a piece of art, which could be shaped as they wished. Shabnam, is a movie director, visits Kolkatta for a premiere of her upcoming movie, decides to pay a visit to her co-star, Harry, who she happened to have a chance to direct. She is lead to the dingy hole of Old Kolkatta, where she finds him in a coma, taken care by Vandana and a nurse. While Vandana is quite spiteful after seeing Shabnam, because she blames her and her crew, for his condition, however bonding over tea, reveals the truth behind everything, conversations about Harish, their equation with Harish, everything. Another parallel narration is seen, when a journalist, recalls his experience of interviewing the veteran actor.

He suggests Harry’s name to his elder brother, who is an aspiring, yet a perfectionist director. After a casual meet with Harry, he understands, in order to convince Harry, he needs to establish a relationship with him and build his trust. Thus, he makes serious attempts to win Harry’s trust, of someone, who is still against the modern world, especially acting in movies, from his study of a lifetime. When Harry finally agrees to work, he accidently meets Shabnam, whom he teaches lessons about life, acting and Shakespeare. As the story develops, one gets to know about Harry’s relationship with Vandana, his reason for quitting without notice and his reason for the illness.

Analysis: Based on Utpal Dutt’s classic play “Ajker Shahjahan”, The Last Lear Click to look into! >> Read More... is an epitome of how adaptations can turn a potential script into a scuttle, and turn a grand theatrical performance into a bad cine experience. It is a poignant story with loose ends, a rambling screenplay, with subplots of emotional women and extreme feminist battering.

Verdict: A small tip, try this to test your patience!
