Plot

The movie's background is set in a post-world war time frame. Malvina, is extremely ill and going into the mouth of death soon. She tells her son that his following words will bring back her spirit. A few months later, Verena, a child health nurse arrives and is employed to take care of Jakob, Malvina's son, who has not spoken a word since his mother's demise. Verena, being with Jakob all the time, develops a caring relationship with him. Due to numerous instances, Jakob realizes that Verena actually cares for him and starts trusting her. Verena learns that Jakob hears his mother's voice in her tomb. She herself checks and realizes that the voices coke from the tomb and that Malvina's spirit resides over there. Klaus, Jakob's father gets angry over Verena that his son has still not spoken in so many months and tries to send her away, but ends up begging her to stay. Distraught, Verena tries to go away but suddenly collapses and is carried to Malvina's bed to be taken care of. Jakob, on seeing Verena on the edge of dying, talks to her, causing Malvina's spirit to return to Verena's body. The movie concludes with the family uniting.

Star Performances

Emilia Clarke as Verena has done an incredible job, portraying her lead role. She is absolutely gorgeous in the frame. Marton Csokas as Klaus Rivi has also done justice to his role. He describes all the features and emotions well. Caterina Murino as Malvina Rivi, had a brief but a capturing role play. Edward George Dring as Jakob Rivi has done an exceptional job as a child artist. Remo Girone as Alessio and Lisa Gastoni as Lilia have also done a fantastic job as supporting actors. All the actors go well together.

Analysis

The movie had a lot of potential in it, but it gets lost in the course of the movie. The cinematography is definitely top-notch. The scenery of the frame and narration set-up is brilliant. But it may feel underwhelming because of its unjustified climax. The movie feels interesting at the beginning, because of the eerie concept it held, but eventually the concept feels lost and the movie doesn't amaze the audience. The movie feels sudden and unjustified at the end. The audience keeps expecting and nothing that amazing happens in the whole story.

What's There?

  • Beautiful cinematography and scenic views. The movie has a unique, eerie and suspenseful Gothic theme.
  • The actors have done an exceptional job. The lead actor, Emilia Clarke has done absolute justice to her role and seems to fit perfectly.

What's Not There?

  • The pace of the movie feels absurd, for the first 40 minutes nothing seems like happening. The audience keeps waiting for the twist, but it doesn't happen.
  • The movie feels lost and underwhelming in response to its theme. It feels carried away in its heavy plot and doesn't reach its full potential.

Verdict

The movie can definitely be a one-time leisure watch for sure. The first half may feel tedious to the audience but it has got an interesting twist to it. The story plot is intriguing and the narration is also excellent. The movie won't disappoint as a one-time watch.
