Plot

The film’s protagonist is Alex Dall, played by Isabelle Fuhrman, a freshman in college with obsessive tendencies. Alex joins the novice rowing program at her college and took to the sport soon after. After her initial training, she became obsesses with the form and technique needed for rowing. When another fellow teammate Jamie Brill, played by Amy Forsyth, is dubbed as the best novice on the team, Alex is distressed and practices even more to improve her skills. They are both promoted to the varsity team, but Alex is moved back to the novice team because of her mistakes. This further fuels her obsessive behavior, to the point that she was struggling emotionally, physically, and academically. The film follows Alex on her obsessive journey to become the best.

Star Performance

Isabelle Fuhrman delivers a stellar performance as Alex. She underwent intense physical training for this role and gained about ten pounds in muscles. She perfectly portrays her characters obsession, emotional fragility, and struggles.

Analysis

The film is a portrayal of the demanding schedules and intense physical training sportsmen go through. The film adds to this portrayal an obsessive protagonist; a character so obsessed with excelling that she ignores her quickly deteriorating mental and physical health.

What’s There?

• The film has good cinematography and background scores that perfectly reflects the dark and disturbed mental state of the protagonist

• The film has thriller and drama elements in a storyline which keeps the viewers invested in finding out the reasons for the protagonist’s obsession and at what point she would stop

What’s Not There?

• The screenwriting and the ending are slightly disappointing

Verdict

“The Novice” is a good thriller with a complementing cinematography that maintains a dark aura surrounding the protagonist. Isabelle Fuhrman gives a stellar performance. So, the film would be a good watch for thriller and drama enthusiasts.
