The film happens to follow a story that takes place in a parallel universe, and it only makes sense for a new actor play the part, in order to distinguish these two universes. Ezra offers a fresh take which Grant couldn't, as there is baggage from the TV series that drags along. But, what is fresher is the progression Ezra brings to the industry by being the first ever openly gay man to play a superhero role, where traditionally the roles were only given to straight men to maintain the masculine image of their character.
From the director of Dark Shadows, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Seth Grahame-Smith, the plot promises to follow the franchise's usual path, where Barry Allen (played by Ezra), a police scientist, gets soaked in chemicals that were struck by lightning while working in his lab one night. Consequentially, it lands him in a coma, from which he wakes up only to realize he's been gifted with super speed. Now, the responsibility of protecting Central City from its perils falls on him as he takes the villains face on.
