Saving Zoe is an American crime drama directed by Jeffrey Hunt from a screenplay by LeeAnne H. Adams and Brian J. Adams, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Alyson Noel. Plot

It's been a year since her older sister, Zoe, was brutally murdered. And fifteen-year-old Echo is still recovering from her death. It made people look at her strangely, turned her mom into a ghost, and her dad got more reasons to work late longer than necessary. Her friends are moving on, and the fresher year has started awkwardly. She isn’t alone, though. Marc, Zoe’s ex-boyfriend, and Carley, Zoe’s best friend, both are taking whatever methods to deal with Zoe’s death. One day, while walking home, Echo comes across Marc's car and sees Zoe's diary on the seat. She shatters the window with a nearby rock to retrieve it and brings it home. At first, Echo was not interested, doubting there was anything in there she didn’t already know. But when curiosity prevails, she starts reading. She became immersed in her sister's secret, forcing Echo to uncover the truth behind Zoe's death. What was in the diary? Will Echo be able to find the truth about her sister’s death?

Star Performance:

The female leads, Zoe and Echo's acting is on point as we go backward in time and then forwards in time to the present day. The two real sisters acting together makes the story unbelievable. There is something uniquely enjoyable about watching sisters portray sisters, and their bond shines off the screen in the poignant moments they share in the film. Slowly watching Echo transform into Zoe as she investigates her death is a worthwhile conceit.

Analysis:

This movie is a very bold attempt. The film is an emotional drama that goes beyond finding closure but reconciling with someone you got to be to be distant. It shows how you may think you know somebody well and seem close to you, but they may be hiding something. It tackles the complicated relationship between two sisters and shows how the bond can endure long after one of them is gone. The message is to bring awareness to issues that aren’t often openly discussed, including sexual exploitation. Also, it shows how the internet could be harmful and impact somebody else’s life.

What’s There?

  • Great storyline
  • Captivating screenplay

What’s not There?

  • Low sound quality

Verdict:

‘Saving Zoe’ is not an easy watch. It may be too heavy for some viewers, as it shows the harsh reality of what some teens have been through, especially in this generation. Even so, the audience will feel happy with the story's end. It's worth a watch if you like mystery and drama.
