Dan Laustsen produces cinematography and Fil Eisler is in charge of music. It is distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.

Plot

Mary, an assassin working in Boston, is tasked with taking out a hit on Marcus Miller, which leaves his young son Danny an orphan. Overwhelmed by a moral dilemma, Mary, who's kept a watchful eye on Danny ever since, must help him out of a bind after some serious trouble pops up with a drug dealer who Danny works for.

Star Performance

Taraji P. Henson does justice to her role as an empowering, strong female action lead. The rest of the cast is just as good, especially Danny Glover, who brings life to his character on-screen.

Analysis

Proud Mary is a sufficiently exciting action movie. It boasts a solid black female lead in a time when representation in action flicks for women who are POCs is not really abundant. Aside from the lead, Danny Glover and the rest of the cast deliver strong performances as well. The music is perfectly in sync with the movie thematically and the action sequences do a pretty good job if not the greatest. The softer side of morally grey individuals is explored in this movie, like the motherly behaviour on Mary's part and the affection she holds for the boy influencing her decisions despite keeping in touch with the cold, practical, ruthless side of her that comes with her job as a hitwoman. It's a great movie that inspires viewers to have more compassion in a cruel world, and work on being better human beings.

What’s There?

● Great acting, even better action sequences

● Engaging soundtrack

● Strong, inspirational message

What’s Not There?

● The plot is not as fleshed-out as it could have been

● Stunts could have been better

● Failed to cover some genuine realistic issues that cropped up in the movie

Verdict

Proud Mary is incredibly empowering from a gendered perspective, with the inclusion of and multi-layered portrayal of a solid black female lead. As an action movie however, it could definitely have been better. Both the storyline and some of the stunts could use some work, but it’s safe to say that it is not a tedious watch. It scores high in the representation department, includes realistic acting and is an engaging movie on it’s own.
