Plot

In New York, Laney Brooks resorts to drug addiction to relieve herself of family woes. She ignores her responsibilities towards her children as well. However, when her tumultuous life takes a turn for the worse, it is up to Laney to get things straight before it’s too late.

Star Performances

Kudos to Paige Dylan, who convinced Amy Koppleman to convert her novel into such a compelling screenplay.

Director Adam Salky and actress Sarah Silverman, with their respective performances, did the rest of the job in style.

Analysis

On-screen adaptations of a novel are never a cakewalk to begin with. However, in the case of ‘I Smile Back,’ director Adam Salky took good care of consulting the original creator for the task.

With the opening sequence itself, we are straightaway introduced to the troublesome life of Laney Brooks. No elaborate introduction, nothing. Straight to business. This might not appeal to some viewers, but to those, who wish for no meandering, nothing can be better than this.

Known more for her comedic acts, Sarah Silverman surprises you with her portrayal of a broken, desperate drug addict Laney Brooks. The extent to which she can go to wreck herself, as well as her own family in the film, is something not many actresses would be courageous enough to attempt. However, on this front, Sarah Silverman does a commendable job.

As the director, Adam Salky has made an engaging, yet tragically funny venture, that will make people contemplate their urge to follow the trend, even if it’s dangerous for their good. The only flaw with this film is its runtime: It’s TOO SHORT! If not for this small mistake, this movie was almost flawless! Apart from the runtime, it was the role of Josh Charles that not many would be impressed with.

What's There?

  • Brilliant adaptation for the screen by writers Amy Koppleman and Paige Dylan
  • Great direction by Adam Salky
  • Outstanding performance by Sarah Silverman

What's Not There?

  • Inadequate screentime for some characters
  • Too short a runtime for a movie of this intensity

Verdict

‘I Smile Back’ is an eye-opener for many. The Adam Salky directorial is hard-hitting and emotional, yet funny in many instances. Sarah Silverman delivers one hell of a performance in this nearly flawless film. Do go and watch this at once if you haven’t!
