Plot

The movie begins with Linda, a scientist working on a genetically modified strain of rice with her father Eric for the company Morgil. The CEO Mr. Gurgon finds an ideal face to sell his agricultural scheme to the farmers of India, which is Linda. The very next moment she leaves for India, on her way to Bilari she meets a local farmer’s son Rajit, and William, an Agricultural Office representative. William started flirting with Linda for his interest in Morgil’s deal also to be able to move to the city of New York Click to look into! >> Read More... . Rajit, to support his college education, plans to sell pest-deterring stinkweed and make money. As Linda was new in the town, Rajit helped her now and then so they were on very good terms. Mogil has set a "Rice Exchange Day" for the local farmers to make deals and trade in their old seeds in exchange for the genetically modified seed developed by the company. The farmers are quickly convinced of Linda's rice, particularly because it dissuades beetles, except Rajit, who suspected that a big multi-corporation wouldn't provide genetically modified rice in credibility and good faith. Will Rajit be able to save the farmers? What happened to the love story of Larson and Rajit? The rest of the movie deals with it.

Star Performance

Brie Larson who played ‘Linda” in “Basmati Blues,” depicts naturalism and nuance. The movie is about a cheerful scientist and all her adventures which Larson played very well. The viewers are also blessed to witness a pure and soulful love story with multiple ups and downs, which is enhanced by beautifully choreographed songs and colorful Indian attires. Rajat’s character leaves the essence of the typical Indian stereotype. Yet Utkarsh Ambudkar gives a sexy, winning performance. He’s a fascinating concern.

Analysis

It's one of those movies that's not exceptional, but it's still worth watching. It has a perfect balance of romance and music but fails to deliver the typical Indo-American effects. The movie doesn't reflect the authentic Indian culture and instead relies on Indian stereotypes like stray goats and spicy foods, completely ignoring the rich culture of the country. While some may argue that it's difficult to find an authentic Indian accent, it just feels old-fashioned. This can either be a great cross-cultural adventure or a horrible extension of colonialism. Therefore, an average Indian may find the movie difficult to connect with. However, the movie beautifully incorporates a love triangle between Linda, Rajit, and William with the rhythm of soulful music - the ultimate language of love.

What’s There?

  • Ear-treating music
  • Indian culture
  • Beauty on agriculture and farmers

What’s not There?

  • Wrong projection of Indians and Indian stereotypes.

Verdict

The movie portrays typical stereotypes of India, but the music element neutralizes it. Though it is not one of the best movies that you see in a while, it is worth a shot.
