English Producer Emile Sherman

Emile Sherman is an Australian film producer. He was born in 1972 in South Africa to Brian Sherman and Gene. Emile has one sibling, one sister, Ondine Sherman. His parents left for Australia from South Africa when he was only four years old. Emile possesses a Bachelors degree in law from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He did his schooling from Cranbrook School in Sydney. He has also done his Masters of Arts degree in The English language from the same university. After his studies, his father insisted him not to choose accountancy as a profession and his mother opposed the idea of Emile being a lawyer. A family tale enticed Emile into the film industry.

His primary production was a documentary about his great, great uncle. His great, great uncle was a lexicographer (used to compile dictionaries) who lived in the period of the world wars, the Bolshevik Revolution, and he also witnessed the independence struggle in Lithuania. Emile’s next production was a small budget film initiated with his friend from the law school. The film, Sample People, starred actors Ben Mendelsohn and Kylie Minogue.

He then, found his first production company, Sherman Pictures. After that, Emile has produced numerous films and finally found his niche. After Sample People, he co-produced Rabbit- Proof Fence, a history-based drama movie, in 2002. Next productions included Ned (an action comedy) in 2003, The Night We Called it a Day (a biographical comedy-drama) in 2005, Oyster Farmer (as executive producer, directed by Anna Reeves) in 2005, Opal Dream (an Indie film) in 2006, Candy (an adaptation of Luke Davies’s novel) in 2006, $9.99 (an animation movie) in 2008, Disgrace in 2009, The King’s Speech (a British historical drama) in 2010, a romantic drama South Solitary (by Shirley Barrett) in 2010, and Kings of Mykonos (a comedy motion picture) in 2010. Emile next produced movies like Shame in 2012, Dead Europe in 2012, Tracks in 2014, Slow West in 2015, Mr. Holmes in 2015, Macbeth in 2015, and Life in 2015. He has also produced some television shows like ‘Banished’ which ran for one year, ‘Love, Nina’, and Top of the Lake. Top of the Lake is currently on air. His upcoming drama film is Lion, directed by Garth Davis.

Emile has been nominated and has won many awards for his productions. Some of the awards were PGA (Producer Guild of America) Award (for The King’s Speech), General TV Award (for Top of the Lake), AACTA Award (for Top of the Lake), FIAPF Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Film,” Alexander Korda Award (for The King’s Speech) in the Best British Film category, and BAFTA Award for (The King’s Speech). The most recognized and celebrated award he has ever won is the Oscar Award for his marvellous movie The King’s Speech.

In 2008, Emile founded the film production company See-Saw Films with Iain Canning. He is also a part of Fulcrum Media Finance. Emile is also the director of the animal protection foundation, Voiceless, since 2004. Voiceless was founded by his father Brian and his sister Ondine Sherman in 2004. He also occupies the position of director in The Sydney Film School and is on the board of The Sherman Foundation. He got married to Carolyn, and the couple has three children.
