Gloria Foster

Gloria Foster was born on November 15, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up under her grandparent’s custody. Gloria was raised by her grandmother, Eleanor Sudds and grandfather, Clyde Sudds on a farm. She completed her education in Chicago and went to the University of Illinois, where she developed interest in acting but she did not became affirm on this career until her godmother introduced her to Goodman Theatre. In early 1960s, she headed to New York City to pursue acting on big screen and Broadway.

“A Raisin in the Sun” was her first stage role but for her performance in “In White America”, she won Obie Award. She played 27 different challenging roles to show the history of blacks In the United States and also got herself two-page article in Life Magazine. Her subsequent performances were noticed by critics and they acclaimed her as majestic, beautiful voiced,  stunning actress. Special roles were written for her and she became famous among the audiences.  

Now it was time to move onto film career, so she debuted in The Cool world in 1963 as Mrs. Custis. She appeared in Nothing But a Man in 1964, Leonard part 6 in 1987 and many more movies. She was popularly known as Oracle in the Matrix and the Matrix Reloaded released in 1999 and 2003 respectively). She was also active on television and performed in shows I Spy (1965), Mod Squad (1968), The Bill Cosby Show (1969), The White Shadow (1978) and many others.

She met Clarence Williams III again on the set of Mod Squad after doing the movie The Cool World together and they married in 1967.They divorced in 1984 and never remarried after her divorce. They remained friends. She died on September 29, 2001 at the age of 67 due to diabetes on the sets of The Matrix Reloaded. Also, her ex-husband announced her death. With her  soft-spoken and polite nature, Foster said good bye to the earthly world.
