English Director James Marsh

James Marsh is an English documentary and film director. He is renowned for his work on the movie Man on Wire, which earned the Academy Award for the Best Documentary Feature in the year 2008, and The Theory of Everything, the multi-award-winning which was based on the biopic of scientist Stephen Hawking released in 2014. Marsh was born in Cornwall and brought up in Sennen, in southeast London. In Woolwich, he stayed in a badly conditioned council house with his family. Marsh earned a scholarship to the University of Oxford. As an undergraduate, he went to St Catherine's College.

He graduated with a certificate in English literature. Marsh started his career in directing with various documentaries for the BBC channel. His debut TV documentary was a 90-minute, film named Troubleman – The Last Years of Marvin Gaye, followed by the 1990 documentary The Animator of Prague which was of 26-minute featuring Jan Svankmajer and his activities. His relationship maintained with the BBC as a creator in 1993 for three Arena series episodes. In 2005 he worked as a directed for The King which was presented at the Un Certain Regard at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2008 he worked on the documentary Man on Wire, based on Philippe Petit's journey in between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in the New York City. The documentary honored at the BAFTA Award for Best British film, the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 81st Oscars, the Independent Spirit Award, and many others. The movie, called had a widely positive audience appreciation and was among the list of Top Ten Films for the year 2008 and even on many critics lists. In 2009, he worked on for the "1980" episode of Red Riding, which was showcased on Channel 4 in the UK. He also worked on Project Nim in 2010, which has aspired from the book Nim Chimpsky: The Chimp Who Would Be Human written by Elizabeth Hess.

It is a documentary based on the landmark study done by Herbert S. Terrace on the topic of animal language, and the topic of the research is a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky. Marsh saw different movies gain influence before starting Project Nim. He followed Frederick Wiseman's Primate, E.T., and the Bresson movie Au Hasard Balthazar. He got most of the information from Au Hasard Balthazar which is a fictional story of a donkey as it moves through different human masters. The construction of Project Nim shows a lot from this movie as we see the tragedy of the human world through the perception of the chimpanzee.
