Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 started on 24 September 2009 on ABC, and it ended on 20 May 2010. This season continues the story of surgical residents, interns, and their mentors as they face difficulties in their competitive careers. Izzie is alive, and everyone’s life is impacted due to George’s death which they deal in their own way. Richards announces merging of Seattle Grace with Mercy West, and the entire staff is scared for their jobs due to budget cuts. Mark gets tired of Cristina’s competitive zeal and gives her a weird case. Arizona stands with Callie when her father brings a priest to convince her about her homosexuality. Izzie is fired from the hospital staff due to kidney patient for which she blames Alex and disappears. April Kepner gets fired because of a patient’s death. Derek does an impossible surgery which Richard told him not to do. Pressure is put on Arizona when her patient’s condition starts getting worsen whose parents had offered a large donation to the hospital.

Cristina tests her relation with Owen by not following his order and even ends up kissing Jackson Avery at a surprise party arranged for Arizona. Callie & Arizona take their relationship to next level. Izzie comes back with her old teacher and is confronted by an angry Alex for not giving him a benefit of doubt. Richard takes break from surgery and starts drinking again after doing mistake in surgery. Cristina starts doubting Owen and Teddy, and Bailey is left astonished after her father makes reckless judgments about her choices. Mark calls Addison for help in treating his pregnant daughter, and Owen questions Teddy’s motives when she gives Christina a complicated surgery. Derek is suspicious when Chief chooses Meredith for assisting him in a high-profile operation. Izzie comes back after knowing that Alex is moving on and tries to win him back. Izzie searches for a job.

Torres gets chicken pox, and Alex breaks up with Izzie so she decides to leave and never return back. Meanwhile, Derek tells the board about Richard’s drinking habit and Richard is fired which makes Derek new Chief. Derek faces a potential lawsuit as Meredith and Bailey’s patients woke up from anesthesia, mid-surgery. Alex begins to invest in Pediatrics, and Teddy refuses to take Cristina on her service. Derek tries to convince Richard for a treatment to leave drinking, and he hires Megan Mostow and April Kepner back. Mark denies talking to a heartbroken Lexie. Everyone is busy on Valentine’s Day, Derek as new Chief, Meredith as Chief’s wife, and Callie & Mark in convincing Sloane to take right step for her baby as she wants to give her baby for adoption. Flashbacks are shown about the affair of Chief & Allie in 1982, Bailey’s pre-Nazi days in 2004, and Callie’s life after her introduction on the show.

Jackson Avery and Harper Avery’s relationship is revealed which makes all the residents trying to gain his attention, while Arizona tries to help Teddy after seeing her obsession with Owen. Mark asks Teddy out which breaks Lexie. Callie questions her and Arizona’s relationship after knowing that Arizona does not want a baby but she does. Hunt shows signs of PTSD, and a flashback of Hunt and Teddy in their army days is shown. Callie tells Mark about Arizona not wanting a child, and Kepner behaves as Derek’s assistant after thinking that she can’t be a surgeon. Meanwhile, Meredith starts hating Derek as Chief when she feels that he stole one of her surgeries. Derek and Meredith discuss having a child, while Alex’s brother reveals Alex’s secrets which makes Bailey happy and Alex irritated. Lexie notices April’s feelings for Derek which is also noticed by Meredith.

Mark’s daughter comes to his house in labour so he asks Torres for guidance as he wants to keep the baby. Cristina confronts Owen about his feelings for Teddy after knowing Meredith’s doubt regarding the same, while Mark finally confesses to Lexie. Then happens a shooting spree by a deceased patient’s husband to take revenge of his wife’s death which leaves many physicians’ life in danger. Meanwhile, Meredith comes to know about her pregnancy, and Cristina breaks up with Owen when he fails to choose between her and Teddy. Reed Adamson, Alex, and Charles are shot by Gary, and Lexie, Mark, Bailey try to save them. Derek is also shot by him after being interrupted by April. Cristina is under pressure to save Derek, and Callie & Arizona restore their relation as Callie confesses that Arizona is more important than the baby for her, but Arizona agrees to have a baby. Gary enters the OR where Derek is being saved so Jackson pretends that he is not saving Derek so that Gary goes away. Owen realizes his love for Cristina and chooses her. Meanwhile, Meredith undergoes a miscarriage after getting scared of the possibility of Derek’s death.
