He was born in Chadayamangalam, Kollam district, and attended Nilamel NSS College. He married Sreeja and has two children. R. Unnikrishnan works in the Malayalam television business as a TV series director. In 2010, he made his debut as a TV series director with Amrutha TV's Swartham. He is now working on the super-duper family comedy Uppum Mulakum for Flowers TV, following the success of Marimayam.
After finishing his studies, he traveled to Delhi searching for work, where he met the well-known Malayalam film director Shyam Prasad, paving the path for him to direct dramas.
