Plot

This film revolves around the rise of RS Praveen Kumar, from humble beginnings to his eventual postings as an IPS officer, and how he later dived into politics.

Star Performances

For all the flaws of the film, at least the acting crew did their job right. Nand Kishore Dhulipala tried his best to make up for the absence of a powerful narrative with his sincere acting.

Analysis

Who doesn’t like the idea of a ‘rags to riches’ story? We have just seen a great example of the same in the much-acclaimed Hindi film ‘12th Fail’. Only months after its release comes up another IPS-oriented film, titled ‘Praveen IPS’. Does it live up to its name?

Written and directed by Durgha Dev Naidu, the film revolves around the trials and tribulations of a young UPSC aspirant, and how he transforms into a successful IPS officer. Comparisons are bound to happen with ‘12th Fail’. However, ‘Praveen IPS’ is not anywhere close to it. Not because it is a unique project, but because the makers couldn’t convert their vision into a compelling project.

Unlike Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Durgha Dev Naidu failed to understand that to make the audience root for the protagonist, he needed to make his struggles appear genuine. The film looked less of a struggle, and more of a hagiography, with rudimentary effects.

Now that wouldn’t have been a bad thing, if there were other things to make up for. However, except for the efforts by the acting crew, the film seemed like a never-ending lecture on ethics and social responsibilities. Much of it has to do with the editing, which failed to cut down on the unnecessary scenes, making the entire film a nearly 3 hour long snoozefest.

The only saving grace was the acting. For all the flaws of this film, Nand Kishore Dhulipala as the protagonist did his best to save a sinking film, even though his efforts weren’t entirely successful

What's There?

  • Only the acting performances

What's Not There?

  • Nothing new in the plot
  • Underwhelming editing
  • Not-so-impressive narrative
  • Forgettable soundtrack

Verdict

‘Praveen IPS’ aimed to be a film with a social message. However, the efforts of writer cum director Durgha Dev Naidu proved incomplete. The only saving grace for this film was the performance of the acting crew, especially from the lead protagonist Nand Kishore Dhulipala.
