My Japanese Niece is a film that takes the viewers on a journey where a young Japanese woman, Asada comes to Manipur to pay homage to an uncle of hers who had apparently passed away in the battle in 1944. When she was in Manipur, she has a dream where her uncle asks her to visit a village. However, on reaching Manipur, Asada comes to know that there was a man who had passed away a few months ago resembled her uncle.
Asada then takes up the journey to find out the truth and meanwhile she discovers and comes to know about the trials and problems faced by the Japanese soldiers in India, and also she finds many unpublished letters and diaries that elaborate her search. My Japanese Niece deals with the life of a Japanese soldier who was left behind after the war. Director Mohen Naorem drove inspiration from the earthquake that hit Japan in 2011 where the Japanese army played a crucial role to help the victims. He believes that the film will bring to light the unidentified humanitarian aspects of the war fought in 1944.
The film’s shooting is that of Bangkok, Japan and Manipur and some parts in the Indo-Myanmar border. Japanese model Yu Asada will be playing the central role as Asada.
