The movie draws inspiration from a book of the 19th century. The novel is titled Copperhead and was written by Harold Frederic. Copperhead is, in fact, the name for the Northern opponents in the American Civil War. Billy Campbell plays the role of Abner Beech, who is the movie’s central character. Abner Beech is a simple farmer from New York. He exercises his democratic rights during the period when families were torn apart by the Civil War in America.
The farmer Abner Beech is a good-natured church goer. He is unbiased and has to pay heavily for his infamous ideologies that are shown in the movie. Also, civilians take sides with the military during the civil war, and several unknown stories are brought to light. The movie has drawn inspiration from a novel. The movie is developed on a very familiar plot and the dramatization seems to lack spirit. But, minute details in history have been captured in the movie. Photography is commendable.
But, the overly good plot has been cinematized in a boring manner and leaves the audiences yawning. Young actor Casey Thomas Brown has done his role well. Other actors in the movie have also performed their roles unrelentingly. Lucy Boynton has the familiar neighborhood appearance. Actor Billy Campbell has got a smooth voice. But, he is a man with a very strong will. Angus Macfayden shares the majority of screen space. He does the role of Jee Hagadorn in the movie.
The deliveries by the artists are realistic although it is a cinema. When Jee Hagadorn’s son drops out of the military, he utters a powerful and crisp sentence that results in pin drop silence in the theater. Actor Peter Fonda makes an appearance in the movie. He is charismatic on screen, but the scenes appear manipulated. In the longer run, the movie happens to be dull and lifeless in spite of scrutiny of details.
