Unlike other regions, (except perhaps Bengal), theatre has always had a strong presence in the Marathi cultural ethos, and over the years has produced several fine actors and actresses who have not only graced the Marathi film and TV scene, but have made their presence felt through brilliant performances in the national arena through the medium of Hindi films and TV serials. Continuing in the same tradition, comes the name of Amita Khopkar, already a veteran of several Marathi, films, serials as well as stage performances, now making her presence felt in Hindi movies and soap also. Like many other artists, she also changed her actual title “Kopkar” to a more assertive sounding “Khopkar” for her screen name.

Anand Ingale, also known by ‘Ingle’ is a supporting actor by profession who was born on November 11 in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Being from the hometown Pune, he completed his schooling from Modern High School, Pune, Maharashtra and graduation from the University of Pune, Pune, Maharashtra. There have been a few cases in the entertainment world where promising careers have been cut short by the cruel hands of death. So was the case of the predominantly Marathi actor Anand Abhyankar, when he met with a fatal car accident while returning to Mumbai, along with fellow actor Akshay Pendse. Earlier in life, following the Marathi tradition, he had started off with a promising theatre career, while he was studying in Pune, where he had shifted from his home town Nagpur.

As he joined more and more theatre groups, his name spread far and wide in the Marathi theatre world, his first commercial play being a comedy. Incidentally one of his co stars in this play happened to be Mohan Joshi who also became famous in Hindi films and TV serials. Anand’s very first play went on to run for over 1000 shows, establishing him firmly on the Marathi stage. 

Moving forward in his stage career, Abhyankar got the opportunity to feature in one more record breaking Marathi play, “Aai Retire Hotey”. This play narrowly missed the 1000 shows mark. With Anand’s name spreading across the state, it did not take much time for him to get roles in Marathi films as well. 

However, it was Mahesh Manjrekar who brought him into the world of Hindi films, through two of his own directorial ventures, “Vaastav” (1999) and “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain” (2000), at the time Abhyankar had become a well known name in Marathi cinema, known for his acting abilities. Anand crossed over to Marathi TV in a big way only much later in 2009 after a solitary performance in Doordarshan many years earlier. The TV performance that hogged the limelight was his role in “Asambhav” (2009), portraying the role of an 85 year old Parkinson’s disease afflicted person with his trembling mannerisms looking almost lifelike.

Although from his very first stage appearance Anand had a penchant for comic themes, he went on to prove through his variety of roles spread across theatre, movies and serials that he was a multi talented actor, and perhaps his best roles that would have come after further maturity was forever lost for his fans, due to his untimely an unfortunate death.

Digambar Naik is a Marathi actor. He is best known for his plays in Marathi, drama series, and films. He is also a comedian. He was one of the main characters in the Marathi film, Namdaar Mukhyamantri Ganpya Gawde, which was released in 2006. He also participated in the BIGG BOSS Marathi, season 2 in 2019. Digambar Naik was born into the Saraswat Brahmin family in 1969 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He received his primary education at Nutan Vidyalaya, Mumbai. Swapnil Joshi is an Indian television and TV actor who mainly acts in Hindi and Marathi movies and serials and is mostly seen in the genre of comedy. He has also done a few lead roles on both TV and in films, like in the sitcoms Krishna and Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan and Marathi films Checkmate and Duniyadaari. Swapnil Joshi gained popularity with the comedy game show Comedy Circus 1 in which he paired up with VIP and was adjudged as the runner-up.

Nilesh Sable is a famous Marathi TV anchor, actor, comedian and an aurvedic doctor. He was born on June 30, 1986, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in India. He won Maharashtracha Superstar a Marathi reality show on zee Marathi. He is mostly famous as a TV host for the Marathi talk show “Chala Hawa Yeu Dya” which is quite famous in Maharashtra. This TV anchor also hosts some of the famous Marathi award shows. Apart from anchoring he also made debut in Marathi film as a lead Hero. The genius comedian won back to back three Zee Marathi awards for best anchoring for the show “Chala Hawa Yeu Dya”.

Mahesh Kothare is a yesteryear Marathi and Hindi actor and is one of the revolutionary and visionary person in the Marathi Film Industry. He was born on September 28 1953 in Mumbai. He began his acting career at a young age by doing two Hindi films, but neither of them were a box-office success.
