Mamoru Oshii is a well known Japanese movie maker and a television director. He has also endeavoured into writing. Mamoru was born in Tokyo, Japan on 8 August 1951. Mamoru liked the movie La jetee directed by Chris Marker in his childhood. He also watched different European movies repeatedly. He did his graduation from Tokyo Gakugei University in the year 1976. He started his career in anime as a storyboard writer in the following year by joining Tatsunoko Productions.

He worked on Ippatsu kanta-kun, an anime character. Most of his work as a storyboard artist included in the television series, Time Bokan. He came to Studio Pierrot with his mentor Hisayuki Toriumi in the year 1980. With Urusei Yatsura, he became the storyboard artist and director. It became a very hit TV series that brought him success. After this, he directed Urusei Yatsura movies, Only You and Beautiful Dreamer. Both the movies were very famous. The first movie was highlighting the original anime style while the second movie highlighted his contemporary new style that he followed in the coming years. He also did independent work while working at the studio. OVA, Dallos was his first independent direction in the year 1983. In the following year, Oshii left Studio Pierrot. He joined Studio Deen and released Angel’s egg in the year 1985. He collaborated with Miyazaki and Takahata for his next film called Anchor, but due to a few disagreements, the release was canceled, initially.

He then joined Headgear as a director and directed Patlabor TV series, OVA along with his colleagues. Oshii delved into The Red Spectacles which was his first non-animated project. Oshii released Ghost in the Shell in the year 1995. This went on to become his best work and was successful all over Japan, Europe, and the United States. It became US Billboard top video. It was the first ever anime video to be recognized by the Billboard. After a big break of 5 years, he came back in 2001 with Avalon which was selected for Cannes Film Festival screening.

He then directed the sequel of his most famous animated feature film, Ghost in the Shell 2. It was honored the Palme d’Or prize (Cannes Film Festival 2004.) It was the first ever animated film to get the award. He did movies like The Skywalkers, Assault Girls, etc. Mamoru Oshii has been awarded a bunch of awards in the animation world and is considered as one of the best anime directors.
