Amar Mitra is Bengali writer. He was born on 30th August 1951 in Bangladesh. Mitali Mitra is his wife. He is the father of Chakori Mitra and Rajasik Mitra. Amar Mitra is a student of chemistry and worked in civil services earlier. He also worked for the Land Reforms Department of West Bengal. Amar Mitra started writing at a young age. In 1978, he published his first collection.

For the novel Dhruboputra, Amar Mitra received the Sahitya Akademi award in 2006. In 2001, he got Bankim Puraskar for his novel Aswacharit by the government of West Bengal. Amar Mitra received the Katha Award for the short story Swadeshyatra in 1998. For the same short story, he got the Sharatchandra Award in 2018. Amar Mitra got an invitation from The First Forum Of Asian Countries. In the capital of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan City. In the meeting, he presented his paper, Mythical Life.

In 2022, Amar Mitra received the O'Henry Prize, the most honourable award, for his short story Gnaoburo. The novel "Dhapatir Char" is translated into English and published by Penguin Random House in their vintage section. Amar Mitra has authored 30 novels and four books for children. Also, he is the author of 10 short stories collection.
