Plot: The movie starts with Lord Vishnu (played by Suman) and Goddess Lakshmi (

) discussing the need of a devout follower of Lord Vishnu to inspire others to follow the Lord’s teaching. The Lord concurs, and Annamayya (Nagarjuna) is born, Annamayya’s early years are the same as all others. After some time, the Lord decides that it’s time for Annamayya to know his real purpose in life. The Lord, in the form of an old man, meets Annamayya and shows him an idol of God Venkateshwara.
After seeing the statue, Annamayya is awe-struck by its beauty. With only the lord’s blessing, he travels to the temple of Tirumala singing devotional songs and also experiences some miracles along the way. After reaching the temple he settles in the nearby village, and with the lord’s blessings marries his two cousins whom he loves. Things go awry when he refuses to sing in the King’s (Mohan Babu) court, will Annamayya’s devotion save him from the King’s wrath?
Analysis: Annamayya is musical and a devotional masterclass. All the elements in the movie are in ideal quantity, and it turns out to be a delight. The transformation of K Raghavendra Rao from a commercial filmmaker to a devotional filmmaker is astounding and seamless, as this is one of the best divine epics to be made in the Telugu film industry. Ajay Vincent, who is in charge of the cinematography has also done a tremendous job. From the acting point of view, this is one of Nagarjuna's best performances. All other actors have also performed their roles duly, but Nagarjuna has the most screen time, and he has done justice to it.
Star Performances: This is Nagarjuna’s best performance till date. His devotion towards Lord Vishnu has been beautifully depicted. Credit must also go to K Raghavendra Rao, who has made a seamless transformation from commercial movie making. In this kind of movies, some actors tend to go overboard, but every cast and crew member here has played his role to perfection. MM Keeravani has done a tremendous job with the songs as well as the background music.
What’s there?
• Nagarjuna is immense in this film.
• Music direction by MM Keeravani is fabulous.
• Mohan Babu and Ramya Krishna have also performed well in their limited but crucial roles.
• Kudos to the location selection team as well, the places selected are perfect for this kind of an epic.
What’s not there?
• The first half is a little slow and for a musical delight it doesn’t have enough songs.
Verdict: If you are a fan of this genre, this is one of the finest you will ever get. Go for it!
