K Balachander’s movie Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu may have poverty in the title, but it is rich in quality. The movie is a typical case of battered youth searching for a job in a city full of the hustle and bustle. Dreams are smashed, and only disillusionment is left over for the youth who are struggling to make the ends meet.

The youth in the movie, including the versatile actor Kamal Haasan and S Ve Shekar, bring life to the characters in the movie. The story is such that both of these youths are educated, but do not have a job that suits them. They have plenty of modern outlooks, and how they project it on screen, one has to watch this wonderful movie to know.

Star Performances

Kamal Haasan’s versatile performances in movies are known till date. He did not betray the expectations among fans in the flick Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu. Sridevi’s action is classic, and there is a fine tinge of humor when S Ve Shekar makes on-screen appearance. Prathap Pothan is a real genius, and such genii are not seen much in present day movies.

K Balachander clearly portrays the problems of the youth during those days.  The darker side of the society is well projected on the screen.  The songs by SPB and Janaki that are aimed at creating social awareness are a strength to the movie.

What is there?

  • The dialogues in the movie are fiery and create an impact on the audiences.
  • The movie is no exaggeration of the plight of youth carrying idealism in their minds.
  • The twists that the movie offers are deeply moving.
  • Bharathiyar’s songs are heard throughout the movie and add to the movie’s credentials.
  • The romance scenes between Kamal and Sridevi, and the song  Sippl Irikkudhu between the two are incredible.

What is not there?

The movie looks like an art movie, which might not entertain lovers of Masala movie.

A masterpiece from K Balachander and Kamal Haasan.
