Certain films have the women playing the main role with lot of earnestness. Thamarai Nenjam, released In 1968 is one such film. Now let’s read the review to understand the depth of my statement.

Gemini Ganesan is his younger brother who is very playful. Saroja Devi is attracted towards Gemini but the latter falls for Vanisree. And to add to the twist, Saroja Devi and Vanisree are close friends. Saroja Devi gives up her love for the sake of Vanisree knowing that Gemini has no love lost for her. The lovebirds get married and Saroja Devi continues her job.

Saroja Devi pens a poem that is eventually published. That paves the way for her to become a writer. She writes her own life story in the form of a serial and with turn of events Vanisree comes to know about her buddy’s sacrifices. What happens next? Watch the movie to know.

Star Performances

The leading women, Saroji Devi and Vanishree have a meaty role in this film. Major Sundarrajan has less scope to perform while Gemini does his romantic hero role with perfection. But again it’s Saroja Devi who virtually carries the movie on her shoulders. And not to forget Vanisree who has portrayed her character well.

Analysis

Thamarai Nenjam was one of the last films of veteran actress Saroja Devi as a leading star. Also this is the only flick in which Saroja Devi and K Balachander worked together. But again, what a masterpiece they gave! K Balachander has brought the best of Saroja Devi in the film.

What’s there?

  • The narration is engrossing all the way.
  • The dialogues are commendable.
  • The climax scene is filled with melancholy, yet engrossing.

What’s not there?

The movie has a dramatic feel to it sometimes.

Verdict:

The movie is worth watching once.
