The movie Padaiyappa is a directorial venture by K S Ravikumar. The movie has Superstar Rajinikanth whose mass appeal could make even an average entertainer a big hit. The movie is one such stretching for more than three hours, with clichéd roles, and exaggerated scenes. The movie might have appealed to Rajini fans, but not to everybody.
The plot is woven with sentiments and romance in it. On one side, there is love that Ramya Krishnan has for Rajini that he does not reciprocate. On yet another side, there is the love Rajini has for a peasant girl, Soundarya. Sivaji Ganesan emerges as Rajini’s father in the movie. And, he is the one who decides on love marriages in the village. There are scenes showing the confined Ramya Krishnan waiting to vent her anger on Rajini. Rajini’s wealth is usurped by the antagonist Manivannan. What Rajini does to combat challenges from Manivannan and Ramya Krishnan forms the rest of the movie.
Rajinikanth does not betray the expectations among his fans. He shows off his physique unlike in previous movies. There is glamour aplenty in the movie. Ramya Krishnan’s audacity on the screen is breathtaking. Her dance performance is simply gorgeous. There are other supporting actors as Soundarya, Nasser, Radharavi, Abbas, Lakshmi, Sivaji Ganesan and Manivannan who have done their roles neatly.
Although a winner of several awards, the movie is strictly meant for fans of Rajini. The movie has the essential ingredients for a masala entertainer. There is nothing unique about the story, and the performances are clichéd. The songs by A R Rahman make the audience dance to the tunes. The movie has got punch dialogues which are appealing to even the small kids.
