Kalathur Kannamma is a Tamil family based movie. It is directed by A. Bhimsingh, produced by A. V. Meiyappan, starring Savitri and Gemini Ganesan in the lead and introduced Kamal Hassan as a child artist. Melodious music is given by R. Sudharsanam. This romantic drama written by Javar Seetharaman was a big hit and commercially successful. It was also remade in several languages like in Hindi as ‘ Mai Chup Rahugi’, in Telugu as ‘Mooga Nomu, in Sinhalese as ’Mangalika’ and in Malayalam as ‘Navavadhu’. There is a story of two people who were in love and got married. However due to some difficult circumstances, they got separated, and their son was forced to grow in an orphanage in spite of having his mother and father both.

Plot: The film starts with the introduction of Ramalingam, Zamindar of Kalathur and his only son Rajalingum. Zamindar’s farmer has a daughter name Kannamma while returning from Madras met with Raja, and they soon fell in love with each other’s lovely nature. They married secretly in the temple, and later Raja moved to abroad for education purpose. During his absence, the Zamindar learned about the truth and ordered her to leave the village and not to mention this truth to anyone.

She left for a nearby town Sevalpatti along with her father. Soon she gave birth to a boy, who was sent to the orphanage by his father and she was informed that the child was stillborn. After this, they settled to Bangalore. The boy grows up in the orphanage and is very bright. Now, Raja returns and come to know the truth and tries to search them but fails. The story goes like this. It will be very exciting to watch that what will happen when all the three come together.

Analysis: Originally T. Prakash Rao was directing this movie, but the producer was not satisfied and replaced. Half of the film was completed but re-shouted by the new director. The Role of Kamal Hasan was initially given to Daisy Irani and also paid but at the last moment, he was replaced. As a child artist, Kamal Hasan proved that he would be the future of film industry. His performance was remarkable and praised by all. In this movie sound is given by R. Sudharshanam and lyrics are written by Kannadasan, Vaali, and Kothamangalam Subbu.

The success of this film shows the overall perfection in story, music, acting and direction. It also won many awards like ‘National Film Award.’ Hassan’s performance earned him a gold medal. It is remade in many languages. As a whole, this is worth watching. The story is written by Javar Seetharaman which was inspired by1960’s film ‘Nobody's Child.’

Star Performances: Well, every star in this cinema done a good job but Kamal Hasan as a child artist was remarkable. His work in the movie is being praised even today. As written by a news article it stated that ‘from Kalathur Kannamma this film industry blessed by an outstanding upcoming actor like Kamal Hassan. He was gifted to us’. The stars in the lead role as were also praised for their work. Their onscreen chemistry was impressive. Other actors in the role like Zamindaar, Kannamma’s father were also impressive. Overall, they all did a great job and made the director feel proud with their acting.
