The Sterlite copper factory run by Vedanta Group had been sealed and shut by the government, following the protest by the Thoothukudi people, as the factory releases harmful substance and pollutes the air and brings harmful diseases including cancer. The Tamilnadu pollution control board ordered to stop the factory and to cut the power supply and the government issued the order to do the same. However, these happened after gun firing and grabbing the lives of 13 people.
Now, the National Green Tribunal canceled the Tamilnadu Government order and ordered the government to supply the electricity, which had been stopped for a few months. The irony in this is that the tribunal had ordered the government to give enough protection to the factory while reopening it. District collector should be present in the place, ordered the tribunal. With the suggestions made by Tarun Agarwala committee, the tribunal has decided this. Tamilnadu government’s GO in shutting the factory is invalid now.
