Diwali is a great time for films. A number of films are released during this auspicious season, hoping that they would do well. Well, this is a list of the top Tamil movies of the last ten years released during Diwali season; these movies received positive response in the box office

Varalaaru - 2006

This Ajith starrer became the biggest hit of the year 2006. It was released during Diwali and had Asin, Kanika, Rajesh, Ramesh Khanna amongst others sharing screenspace with Ajith. Ajith donned three roles in this film and gave a spell-binding performance as Shivashankar, Jeeva, and Vishnu. The music of this K S Ravikumar’s directorial venture is done by A R Rahman. The movie had a well-conceived premise and became successful even after being under production for a long time.

Vallavan - 2006

Vallavan, another Diwali release of 2006, also performed good at the box office. The movie is an outright entertainer with Silambarasan, Nayantara, Reema Sen, and Sandya in the cast. Simbu also donned the role of a director in this film. The movie was oozing with youthfulness and that worked in favor of it.

Polladhavan - 2007

This is a thriller film with the hit combination of Dhanush and Vetrimaran. Divya Spandana played the female lead in this film which was released on Diwali of 2007. This film was a great commercial hit due to its well-paced narration and Dhanush excelled in the role that fit him to the T. The movie also went on to garner four Vijay Awards including Best Director for Vetrimaaran.

Vel - 2007

Another flick that was released during Diwali 2007 is Suriya starrer Vel. Asin, Vadivelu, Nasser, and Kalabhavan Mani shared the screenspace with Suriya. The movie had all the essential ingredients of director Hari and the screenplay is quite good. The movie went on to become a blockbuster. This was the second association of Suriya with Asin after Ghajini.

Vaaranam Aayiram - 2008

This Diwali release of 2008 is a directorial venture of Gautham Menon and Surya essayed dual roles w in a seamless manner. Simran, Divya Spandana, Sameera Reddy also did a competent job in this film that primarily dealt with the bond between a father and a son. It is one of the greatest hits of Suriya and became a major success at the box office. The songs of the movie, composed by Harris Jayaraj, were also hits.

Aadhavan - 2009

This action-comedy flick directed by K S Ravikumar was released in Diwali 2009. Suriya and Nayantara were the lead characters and were supported by B Saroja Devi, Ramesh Khanna, Vadivelu, Anand Babu etc. This movie did a good job at the box office.

Peranmai - 2009

This film, which falls under the genre of war-adventure, was directed by S P Jananathan. Jayam Ravi played the male lead in this Diwali release of 2009. The movie had a moral base attached to it and Jayam Ravi gave an earnest performance. He was well suppported by a group of young actresses.

Mynaa - 2010

Mynaa is a directorial venture of Prabhu Solomon and it was released during the Diwali of 2010. Vidharth and Amala Paul were the pivotal characters and it was widely appreciated by crtics. It also won the Best Film Award at the Filmfare Awards of South regions. D Imman’s music was also another highlight of this movie. Vidharth and Amala Paul debuted in Tamil with this film and gave realistic performances.

7aum Arivu - 2011

This film which is directed by A R Murugadoss had Suriya playing the male lead. Shruti Haasan debuted in Tamil with this flick. This movie was released in Diwali 2011. The movie is a science fiction and goes through the life of Bodhi Varma who is an expert in martial arts and medical treatments. This movie, which also had good music by Harris Jeyaraj, became a commercial success.

Velayudham - 2011

Velayudham was also released in 2011 and it had Vijay as the lead and M Raja as the director. M Raja teamed up with Vijay for the first time through this movie. Hansika Motwani and Genelia D’Souza played the female leads in this powerpacked action masala movie. Saranya Mohan played the sister of Vijay. The movie revolves around a commoner who turns into a superhero due to twists. Vijay did an excellent job with a role that was tailor made for him.

Thuppaki - 2012

This is a directorial endeavor of A R Murugadoss and had Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal playing the lead roles. Vidyut Jammwal, Jayaram and Sathyam were also cast in this film which was released during Diwali 2012. The movie had the trademark gripping execution of Murugadoss coupled with Vijay’s outstanding performance. The movie became one of the greatest hits of Tamil cinema.

Aarambam - 2013

Aarambam was released during the Diwali of 2013 and had Ajith Kumar and director Vishnuvardhan joining hands. Arya, Nayantara and Taapsee Pannu, Rana Daggupathi formed part of the ensemble cast. Aarambam is a convincing thrill ride and is a stylish and gripping movie. The movie made great business in the box office.

Kaththi - 2014

Following the success of Thuppaki A R Murugadoss and Vijay joined hands again in Kaththi which is an action film. Vijay took up dual roles with ease and was supported by Samantha Ruth Prabhu and an ensemble of cast. This movie, which was a commercial film with a good social perspective, also did superb business at the box office. This movie was released during Diwali 2014.

Thoongaa Vanam - 2015

This crime thriller starring Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, and Prakash Raj amongst others, was released in 2015. Kamal Haasan played the role of a Police officer in the Narcotics Control Bureau. Kamal Haasan, Prakash Raj, and Trisha gave outstanding performances in this film which did decent business at the box office. Rajesh M Selva took up direction of this film.

Vedalam- 2015

Vedalam was also released in Diwali 2015 and is an action-masala movie with Ajith donning the lead role. Siva directed this film and Lakshmi Menon played the sister of Ajith while Sruthi Haasan donned the lead heroine role. The movie is a mass entertainer and Ajith was at his best. The movie had its share of entertaining moments. Vedalam also did superb business in the box office.
