Making films is a risk, and so is making television shows. You never know what the audience will like, as their preferences cannot be predicted. They might accept today what they rejected 20 years ago, or they might still reject it. It all depends on the masses, and the success of a show or a film depends on them too. In such cases, the directors have started to get ‘inspired’, where the movies are frequently copied from Hollywood. Television has taken this to another level, by extending movies that become hits among the audience into serials. Something done frequently by the well-known producers like
Ekta Kapoor, sometimes the serials copy exact scenes from Bollywood movies, and sometimes they copy the entire story. The following are 20 such Indian television daily soaps that have taken ‘inspiration’ from Bollywood movies.
The movie, despite being long was massively successful. Even though the movie was surrounded by numerous controversies, Ashutosh Gowarikar managed to pull through and present a grand film with two strikingly good looking actors. Jodha Akbar then came to television, with less beautiful actors and a lot more layers.
The show has just started, but it is said to be loosely based on
Ayushmann Khurrana ’s ‘
Dum Laga Ke Haisha’.
Prince Narula is making his daily soap debut opposite a theatre actress, and both seem supremely excited for the show, which is based in Haryana.
Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat’
Ashoka is today a Colors TV show with a faithful fan following and some really good looking actors like
Mohit Raina and Saumya Seth. It is a little tweaked, as daily soaps generally are, and is an extended form of the movie ‘
Asoka’, which released in 2001 and starred
Shah Rukh Khan and
Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles.
4. ‘Sapna Babul Ka…Bidaai’
The show that starred
Kinshuk Mahajan and
Angad Hasija in leading roles as sisters and their respective husbands, was based entirely on the popular film ‘
Vivah’. It was released in 2006 and starred
Shahid Kapoor and
Amrita Rao in leading roles, along with other actors like
Alok Nath as Amrita Rao’s father and
Amrita Prakash as her sister with a darker complexion.
Do Hanson Ka Jodaa’
The serial starred
Shaleen Bhanot and
Shubhangi Atre Poorey, and was on air on NDTV imagine during the year 2010. The serial was based on
Anushka Sharma ’s debut film ‘
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’, that starred Shah Rukh Khan as her character’s husband. The film had released in 2008.
6. ‘Love You Zindagi’
Imtiaz Ali ’s ‘
Jab We Met’ became a cult classic because of Geet’s self-love. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, despite their break up, showed chemistry like never before on-screen, and managed to make the film a huge hit. Based on the same theme, in 2011, Star Plus launched Love You Zindagi, starring
Dill Mill Gayye’
The show was a sequel of sorts to ‘
Sanjeevani’, where new interns entered the hospital and the story focused on their training, and their internal equations. Although the story was not entirely copied, the sequences in the show were frequently entirely copied from movies. The director would recreate certain sections of films in the show. They recreated sequences from ‘
Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘
Andaz Apna Apna’, and so on.
Rang Badalti Odhani’
Providing another instance of serials copying entire sequences from movies, this show had the very famous towel dance done by
Ranbir Kapoor for ‘
Saawariya’. It was reshot on
Karan Tacker, who in our opinion is just as handsome as Ranbir Kapoor, if not more.
Kya Huaa Tera Vaada’
‘Biwi No 1’ is described as a comedy, starring
Salman Khan, ‘
Anil Kapoor and
Sushmita Sen, with
Saif Ali Khan in a guest appearance. But the theme was nowhere close to funny, as it involved betrayal and an attempt to break a marriage. This was taken up in its true essence by Ekta Kapoor’s Kya Huaa Tera Vaada. The show starred
Jamai Raja released in 1990, starring Anil Kapoor,
Madhuri Dixit and
Hema Malini. It was an entirely new idea, where a man, for his love and her family, agreed to do all that a woman does for her husband’s family. Zee TV came up with a daily soap version of the show, starring
Ravi Dubey as the Jamai Raja.
11. ‘Dil Se Di Dua…Saubhagyavati Bhava?’
Karanvir Bohra ’s character went to new lows to throw insight into an abusive, dominating husband. Although Sriti Jha was not a stunner, Harshad Chopra stole the show with his acting and persona. This daily soap was an extension of the movie ‘Daraar’, which starred
Arbaaz Khan and
Juhi Chawla. It had a similar plot with a lot less cruelty, as in the daily soap, Karanvir Bohra’s character was downright mental.
Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki’
The show began in 2011 and ended in 2012, and starred
Sudeep Sahir and Aadesh Chopra. Although not entirely similar, the show had a similar concept when compared to the movie ‘Sajan’, released in 1969. It starred
Om Puri and
Bade Acche Lagte Hai’
Another one of Ekta Kapoor’s shows, Bade Acche Lagte Hai had her favourites,
Ram Kapoor and
Sakshi Tanwar, in the lead roles. It focused on the love story of two middle aged people who marry and eventually fall in love. It was an extension of the movie ‘Teri Kasam’ that released in May 1982, starring
Kumar Gaurav and
Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap’
Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap was a television show that garnered much popularity with
Faisal Khan ’s wonderful performance and the support of the other actors around it. The show had gone on air in 2013, and the last episode was aired in 2016, with Maharana Pratap’s death in Haldi Ghaati. It was an expanded version of the movie ‘Maharana Pratap: The First Freedom Fighter’ that had released in 2013 and starred Narayan Singh Sisodiya.
Released in 2011, the television daily soap presented a great insight into the life, trials and tribulations of the great Chandragupta Maurya. The show starred
Ashish Sharma as Chandragupta Maurya and went on for some 124 episodes. It explained in detail what the movie ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ had fit into a much shorter duration and starred
Nirupa Roy and
Bharat Bhushan among others.
Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin became extremely popular; more popular than any other show had ever been. Starring Mouni Roy, Ada Khan and
Arjun Bijlani, anyone who was connected to the show gained new heights of popularity and it easily led to a reboot of their career. This concept has been taken up from the several movies that focus on shape shifting creatures, but among the first to bring it up was the 1976 film ‘Naagin’, that starred
Feroz Khan, ‘Jitendra’,
Reena Roy, ‘
Geet Hui Sabse Parayi’
The show became popular mainly because of the bickering between Mann and Geet, essayed by
Gurmeet Choudhary and
Drashti Dhami. The two actors took their careers to new heights through this show. It was a remake of the heart touching story ‘Pardes’ that starred Shah Rukh Khan.
We all knew this was coming! Next year, there will be two shows that will be extended versions of the movie. We know for sure that one of them will be on Sony TV, and the other will be on another channel that we will soon find out. The movie did tremendously well, the audience loved the chemistry between
Priyanka Chopra and
Deepika Padukone, so they definitely need to take some intense and dynamic people.
19. ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’
It’s a movie, not a serial, we know that. There is a serial that is under the shutters right now, that will star
Siddharth Shukla in the role played by Salman Khan, and Jasmine from ‘
Tashan E Ishq’, along with one other actress. This show will go air sometime by the end of this year or sometime early next year.
20. ‘Meenu Mausi’
This is also an upcoming show, which will star
Sanaya Irani and Harshad Chopra. Both the actors have a huge fan following and their fans are waiting eagerly for the show, which will be a remake of the movie ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’, starring
Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, where Sanaya Irani will be placed in Aamir Khan’s position and Harshad Chopra will be seen enacting the role that Juhi Chawla played in the movie and in the life of Aamir Khan’s character and the children that the character was in charge of.
