V. J. Sabu Joseph

V.J. Sabu Joseph is a renowned film editor in the Tamil film industry. Although he started his journey in the year 2002 by working as an associate film editor with veteran film editors- J. N. Harsha, and Anthony- his first project as an independent editor was for the movie ‘‘Aanmai Thavarael’ (2011). V.J. Sabu hails from an orthodox Christian family, who had nothing to do with cinema, and Sabu Joseph began learning visual communication as he wanted to follow a different path in his career for which he received full support from his family. With his family’s full support he entered the film industry and learned to edit. It was in the year 2002; he entered the film industry when manual editing was getting translated into the digital platform, Sabu got an opportunity to learn manual editing from Udhay Shankar, a renowned editor. Even his associate editor Ravichandran helped Sabu. Ravichandran directed and edited movies like ‘Crazy Star.’  After getting some useful knowledge from Ravichandran and Udhay Shankar, Sabu joined Sathish and Harsha as an associate editor. He worked with Harsha on the movie ‘Autograph’ and gained some valuable experience to enhance his career. In the year 2004; he started gaining further experience in the field of editing from Anthony who helped him be a part of his projects ‘Manmadhan’ and 'Four the People'. The editor even was also associated with the Kannada movie ‘My Autograph’. Some of the prominent directors who helped him were Thankar Bachan and Vasanth for movies like ‘Pallikoodam’ and ‘Santham Poadadhey.’ After gaining experience as an associate editor with many popular Kannada and Tamil movies, ‘Aanmai Thavarael’ was his first film as a solo editor. V J Sabu Joseph even edited the trailer of a movie directed by Arivazhagan which was titled 'Eeram'. His editing work was highly appreciated by Rajanikanth. For a few people, films will become their big break, but for V J Sabu Joseph, editing a trailer for the movie 'Eeram' was the real stepping stone in his career. The editing of the trailer helped the film editor to get his first break in ‘Vallinam’ which was considered to be his second release and also his second film. ‘Vaillnam’ released in 2014 and it was delayed too for unknown reasons. But this film fetched him a ‘national award’ in editing. The editor is well known to adapt his style of editing. He understands the genre and theme of the film for perfect editing. After the success of ‘Vaillnam’, V J Sabu Joseph got many offers. They include Lakshmy Ramakrishnan's 'Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe' and Ramprakash Rayappa's 'Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavum' (2014), Sathya Prabhas Pinishetty’s  'Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka', N. J. Srikrishna's Naalu Policeum Nalla Irundha Oorum (2015) and many more movies. In the initial days, he made a lot of contacts in the industry, and this helped him to get slowly associated with big projects. He considers Ravichandran as a real master in the craft of editing. He feels Oscar V. Ravichandran aka Aascar Ravi is great in grasping the tastes of the audience who balances a right chord with masses. After winning the national award for editing, the pressure to perform has increased manifold not only from the film industry who want him to work in the most engaging manner possible but also the expectations from the public have increased which would bear the real testimony to his career now.
