Shashidar Adapa

Shashidhar Adapa is an Indian Art director and designer. He designs sets, puppets and leads the production design in movies. He works in the Kannada film Industry. He has done production design for over thirty years in the industry and worked with theatre personalities and filmmakers such as Shankar Nag, M. S. Sathyu, B. Jayashree, Girish Karnad, Girish Kasaravalli, Mani Ratnam, etc. He took birth in Mangalore, Karnataka on 1st September 1955. Shashidhar’s works expanded not only in Kannada or Hindi movies but went to the French cinema as well. His contribution in noted in films such as Santha Shishunala Sharifa, Kanooru Heggadithi, Aa Dinagalu, Nooru Janmaku, Bas Yun Hi, Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, Passeur d'enfants à Pondichéry, etc. He has received several awards in his long career including Karnataka State Best Art Direction Film Award (four times), Chaman Lal Memorial Award, Karnataka Governments’ Rajyotsava Prashasti, Best Art Direction-Innovative Film Award, etc. He started his career in the early 1980’s; he designed stage for theatre stage plays initially. In 1984, Shashidhar founded production Design Company under the name Prathiroopi. It worked mainly in Kerala for theatre sets, TV show sets, and Stage events. He led a group of artists in events such as the annual Hampi Utsav in Karnataka. Shashidhar became a designer and a teacher as well. In 1989 he began designing props and stage sets for Kannada movies, his first film was Sankranthi. Then he worked with production design in director T. S. Nagabharana’s Santha Shishunala Sharifa. Within a decade Shashidharan became a well-known name in the art of production design. He did collaborations with directors such as T. N. Seetharam, T. S. Nagabharana, and Girish Kasaravalli. His four-decade-long career involves more than thirty Kannada movies. Songs of his excellence reached Bollywood, and in 2002, he did production design for Arjun Sajnani’s directorial Agni Varsha that featured Jackie Shroff and Amitabh Bachchan. He contributed in some other Bollywood films such as Bas Yun Hi and Amir Khan’s Talaash: The Answer Lies Within. In 2000, Shashidhar worked in an original French TV series: Passeur d'enfants à Pondichéry. It became his first venture in foreign cinema. Later, he also worked in Hypochondriac. In 2015, Shashidhar designed the State Tableaux of Karnataka at the Republic Day parade. It had forty-two toys of Channapatna. A year later, he designed other tableaux, this time based on Kodagu district theme that represented various steps of the coffee plantation.
