Hariprasad Chaurasia

Hariprasad Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, on July 1, 1938. He is an Indian music director and classical flutist who plays the traditional Hindustani classical. His mother passed away when he was six years old. He learned music without the knowledge of his father since he wanted him to be a wrestler. At the age of 15, Chaurasia began learning vocal music from his neighbor, Rajaram. Later, he started playing the flute for eight years under the instruction of Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi. He started working as a performer and composer for All India Radio in 1957 in Cuttack, Odisha. In 2013, the documentary film “Bansuri Guru” was made on Chaurasia's life and legacy and was directed by the musician's son Rajeev Chaurasia. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has received several national and international honors, including the Sangeet Natak Academy (1984), the Konark Samman (1992), the Padma Bhushan (1992), the Yash Bharati Samman (1994), the Padma Vibhushan (2000), and the Pandit Chatur Lal Excellence Award (2015).
