Ravi Shankar Sharma or also known as Ravi is an Indian music director, who became popular for composing music for several Malayalam and Hindi films. He was born on March 3, 1926, in Delhi. Ravi has learned music by listening to his father, who sings Bhajan songs. He doesn’t have any formal training in classical music and instruments.

He had worked as an electrician to support the needs of his family. During the 50s, he decided to move to Bombay to pursue his dream. However, luck was not on him; he became homeless and only sleeps in Malad railway station. In the year 1952, playback singer and music director, discovered him and hired him to sing for the 1952 Hindi patriotic-historical film, Anand Math. Since then, there’s no looking back. Ravi has contributed several hit songs and earned Filmfare nominations for scoring music for films like Nikaah (1982), Ankhen (1968), Hamraaz (1967), Do Badan (1966), and Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960).

He bagged Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director in films like Khandan (1965) and Gharana (1961). Ravi has many songs that became popular in wedding events including Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Doli Chadh Ke Dulhan Sasural Chali, etc. Ravi made a huge contribution in shaping Asha Bhosle’s career through the songs Sun Le Pukar Aai and Tora Man Darpan. He is also an instrument in making the late a popular Bollywood singer. He took a hiatus in 1970 until 1982. He also gave music for B.R. In the 1980s, he returned to music direction as Bombay Ravi. He scored songs for Malayalam and Hindi films including the 1986 Malayalam film, Panchagni. The songs Aa Raatri Maanju Poyi and Saagarangale were hits. In 1988, he also scored music for Bharathan’s Vaisali. His association with Hariharan was considered as one of the best in the Malayalam film industry. He got married in 1946, but his wife died in the year 1986.
