Ruma Guha Thakurta is a Bengali film personality who acted and sang in many Bengali movies. She is very much known to the film industry because she married the legendary playback singer
Kishore Kumar. They even have a son named
Amit Kumar who also has sung in Bengali and Hindi movies. Always she is credited as Kishore Kumar’s first wife(1951 – 1958), but she got divorced later. Later she married Arup Guhathakurta ((1958 – 2004).
Ruma is known for her acting in many Bengali films that wer super hits in the theaters. People still remember her for playing a brief role in Moushumi Chatterer’s debut film ‘Balika Bodhu’ nearly six decades ago. In the year 1960, she acted in Hindi movies like ‘Mashaal’ and ‘Afsaar’ in early 1950’s. Later, she acted in a Bengali movie ‘
Ganga’. In the year 1962, she acted in Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Abhijan’ which had
Waheeda Rehman and Soumitra Chatterjee playing the lead characters. Next year, she acted in a Bengali movie ‘'Nirjan Saikate' directed by Tapan Sinha. She even acted in two successful movies ‘'Baghini' and 'Antony Firingee' which released in the theaters in the year 1967.
Ruma's prominent films include ‘Bairaag’ (Hindi) with
Dilip Kumar and
Saira Banu, and ‘Dadar Kirti' (1980) which had Tapas Pal, Debashree Roy and Mahua Roy Choudhury in lead characters. She acted even in Aparna Sen’s much-acclaimed movies such as ‘36 Chowringhee Lane’ (1980) where she played Debashree Roy’s mother and a Mira Nair’s film ‘Namesake’(2006) where she acted as Irrfan Khan's mother. Ruma Guha Thakurtha also acted in another Satyajit Ray’s popular movie ‘Ganashatru’ (1990) and Tapan Sinha’s another much-acclaimed movie ‘Wheel Chair’ (1994). She has sung songs in popular Bengali movies like Lukochuri, Teen Kanya, Baghini, Antony Firingee to name a few. She now leads a retired life as an actress and singer. She spends her time either in Mumbai or Kolkata.
