Shankar made an appearance in several films. She acted in films like- Ek Din Pratidin, Dooratwa, Oka Oori Katha, Pink, Kharij, Dakhal, etc. She was engaged with Mithun Chakraborty, her co-star in her debut film but soon both of them went their separate ways breaking their engagement. Though Mamata and her husband found the dancing institute in the year 1986, Mamata already had a ballet troupe since the year 1978 known as Mamata Ballet Troupe which went on conducting ballet performances in several countries. The ballet group’s first production was based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Chandralika in the year 1979.

The group gave various performances Milap, Sabari, Shikaar, Mother Earth, etc. Her son Ratul Shankar is a known percussionist and an actor. Mamata has worked in several films and did not plan to stop anytime soon. She believes in waiting for the good and different script to work on before signing for her roles. In the year 1993, Mamta received Bengal Film and Journalism Association Award for her supporting role in film Shakha Prashakha and the year 2000, she again became the recipient of BFJA Award for being a supporting actress in movie Utsab.
