Kaushik Ganguly duo fits ideally into this category. While Churni has established herself as a fine and sensitive actress who has matured very well over the years, Kaushik Ganguly has found his place as a bold and creative director from amongst the current genre in the Bengali movie industry, known for his treatment of unconventional themes. However, rather strangely, Churni came into the Bengali film industry via the route of Hindi TV serials produced in Mumbai, acting in Zee TV’s maiden soap offering “Rahaat” and also lending her performance to a mother’s role in “Chhoti Si Aasha” for the same channel during her two years sojourn in Mumbai. Earlier she had acquired a base in theatre, during her college days at Jadavpur University which must have stood her in good stead during her stint in Mumbai. Besides, her University also gave her the opportunity of meeting up with her future husband Kaushik, through the platform of theatre. Her debut year for films was 2004, when she had decided to come back to Kolkata, and was introduced to films by none other Kaushik Ganguly himself in the film “Waarish”, in which she had to portray the difficult role of a single mother. The way she did justice to her role brought her instant recognition by way of the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards (BFJA) award in 2005 for best actress in the film. However, being slightly off beat, it did not receive the box office ratings she would have liked. After this she acted in a series of films directed by her husband Kaushik, and most of these were on rather complex themes dealing with uncommon sexual orientations. In her next film she acted in the role of a flat bosomed woman and its repercussions on the male protagonist. Although obviously adult and complex in theme it drew credit for her acting as well as the film itself. Her next film “Jara Brishtite Bhijechhilo” dealt with female homosexuality, while the one after that “Chalo Let’s Go” was on a more familiar theme and basically a travelogue. Amongst other films deserving mention was the one in which she starred with the famous director Rituporno Ghosh, who enacted the role of a male homosexual in the film entitled “Arekti Premer Golpo”, incidentally also directed by her husband Kaushik, followed by another by the husband wife duo called “Rang Milanti” about the life of a TV actress. In between she briefly revived her contacts with Mumba,i acting with Naseeruddin Shah Naseeruddin Shah is an experimental actor and asso >> Read More...
