Dr. Shriram Lagoo is an Indian actor who is known for being a character-specific or a method-actor. Lagoo originally from Satara completed his formal education at Fergusson College and graduated from the B.J.Medical College. He discovered his passion for drama and the theater during his college days, and joined Bhalba Kelkar’s “Progressive Dramatic Association.” Kelkar, a senior student at the same college Lagoo, attended, shared his like-mindedness, and penchant for acting. Later on, Lagoo pursued further specialization in his education field by taking up a course in ENT in Mumbai. He practiced medicine in Pune, Mumbai, and also continued training in various courses abroad. In the year 1969, Lagoo made his theater debut with the Marathi stage play “Ithe Oshalala Mrityu,” thus switching his mainstream profession into acting. He also worked briefly with Rangayaan, a theater company in Mumbai. Lagoo is renowned for his lead role in the well-known Marathi play “Natasamrat,” scripted by Kusumagraj.

The next decade saw him in films such as Do Aur Do Paanch, Swayamvar, Sadma, Pukaar, Kaamchor, and in Ben Kingsley’s “Gandhi,” just a name a few of the lot. The 90s featured him in Khuddar and “Aurat Aurat Aurat.” Lagoo was a part of more than forty stage plays, inclusive of Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati, also directing many of them. In his legion of Awards, Lagoo is the recipient of a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, a Kalidas Samman, and a Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. Lagoo is an anti-corruption crusader, and an activist, who was a part of Anna Hazare’s campaign in 1999. He has also been extremely vocal about various social issues and is actively involved in philanthropy.
