If there is one word that can describe Qaushiq Mukherjee, it is this: Controversy. Qaushiq Mukherjee, or as the industry calls him- ‘ Q Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, is an Indian movie director. His name is drenched in controversy. Most of this aura of his arises because of his cult movie- Gandu. The movie is shot as a black and white flick, in Bengali, and rightly caused controversy throughout the country due to sexual content, strong language, anger, violence, and crime. Q, on the other hand, said that it was a “rap musical,” when asked about the pornographic content of the film. While it caused a row in India, the movie was very well received in more progressive cultures, like the United States.

It was first aired at the prestigious Yale University and then internationally at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival held on 29th October in the Big Apple- New York City. There it won the award for Best Film as well! Gandu was also showcased at major film festivals worldwide later such the Sundance Film Festival as well as Berlin International Film Festival. After been screened world over, the movie was finally released in India in 2012, after 2 years! Qaushiq ‘Q’ Mukherjee has always been an ardent films fan. Growing up in Kolkata he studied at South Point High School and then did his honours in arts at the Calcutta University.

He then toured the entire subcontinent working as part of an advertising team. He spent a cumulative 12 years, working in Indian, Sri Lanka and Maldives for this advertising project. He later entered the cinema line with his breakout film Boudi. He has made several films such as Ludo, X, Tasher Desh, and his latest Brahman Naman- which is also the first “Asian original film to be broadcasted on Netflix”. Apart from that, Q is also the founder of the film production house Overdose Joint. Just like the letter ‘q’ doesn’t go well with too many vowels, Q himself is a difficult person to handle. However, as is the case in scrabble, if you play it right, the letter q does manage to bring home a lot of points. The sheer talent of Qaushiq Mukherjee is immense.

Maybe his films aren’t fit for the Indian audience, but no one can question his genius behind the camera. His portrayal of themes such as despair, hopelessness, and sorrow is unparalleled and his movie making style leaves the Avant-Gard post- modernist film makers mesmerized and enticed. His movies have a soul of their own, which show the flawed nature of human’s in the most beautifully morbid light. Rest assured, the man is an enigma in his own right. Q currently lives with his live-in girlfriend Rituparna Sen and they’ve been in a relationship for the past 5 years now. Both of them never want to get married, as they revealed in an interview. Both are happy with each other and want to keep working together.
