Roger David, or better known as ‘Bohemia’, is an American-Pakistani rapper and songwriter. He was born in Karachi, Sindh, on 15th October, 1979, in a Punjabi-Christian family. One of his forefathers was Sikh, so he has a Bible as well as a Guru Granth Sahib. His father worked at Pakistan International Airlines. His father was transferred to Lahore, where his childhood was spent, and they later stayed at Peshawar, until his family moved to San Francisco. In 2002, he released the first Punjabi rap album and is regarded as the world’s first Punjabi rapper.
Bohemia used to write poetry in Punjabi and Urdu, and even learned music from his father. His mother died when he was 16 years old, due to cancer. At local events, he used to play keyboards and perform to enhance his credibility and talent. He left his school and family to become a musician, when he got a job at a recording studio in a small town in California. Bohemia toured in US and Canada, and performed there along with other musicians. He used to sleep in cars and on the floors of the recording studios.
Bohemia later joined his cousin in his Oakland recording studio, where he met Sha One, who helped him with his first album, “Vich Pardesan De”, developing a new genre in the field of music known as Desi Hip Hop. This album received a huge response from the people. They tuned in with the new music and popularized it. The album was on the BBC Top 10 in 2002 and was an immense hit. In 2006, his 2nd album was released, which was No. 3 in Planet M charts, and was in the Top 10 in Maxim downloads. In 2012, his 4th album was released, Thousand Thoughts, which won the Best Punjabi Album Award, in the Non-Resident category, at the PTC Music Awards. It gathered a huge response from the audience and was largely popular among the youth. Bohemia also contributed his voice for Bollywood movies like Chandni Chowk to China, 8x10 Tasveer, and
. He performed for the Coke Studio in the 5th season and was the first rapper in the season, where he presented three songs. He has also worked with Sean Kingston and Sonu Kakkar.
In 2012, Bohemia signed a contract with Sony Music India, the company manages his music albums, shows, and events under the artist's contract with the company. In 2014, he released his independent album under his brand, Kali Denali Music.
