Paava Kadhaigal is an anthology film streaming on Netflix. The film has four different stories directed by Sudha Kongara Prasad, Gautham Menon, “Vetrimaaran” and Vignesh Shivan. The stories have the star cast of Prakash Raj, Gautham Menon, “Simran,” Sai Pallavi, Kalki Koechlin, “Anjali,” Kalidas Jayaram, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Bhavani Sre. Ashi Dua, Rhea Kongara, Ronnie Screwvala and Avinash Viswanathan are the producers of this anthology. Thangam is scripted and directed by Sudha that has Shanthanu, Kalidas and Bhavani in the cast. Shan Karuppasmy co-scripted the film. “Jomon T John” cranked the camera. Vaanmagal directed by GVM has Simran in the cast alongside GVM. Ganesh Rajavelu cranked the camera. Oor Iravu is directed by Vetrimaaran that has Prakash Raj and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. Love Panna Uttranum is directed by Vignesh Shivan and it has Kalki, Anjali and Padam Kumar in the cast. Theni Eshwar cranked the camera. Anirudh Ravichander and Justin Prabhakaran composed the music.
Thangam directed by Sudha has Kalidas playing a transwoman, Sattar, who is in love with a guy. But, he loves Sattar’s sister. However, he has some friendly feelings for Sattar. Sattar didn’t receive a basic consideration from his family, even his mother, as he is a transwoman. Vaanmagal is directed by Gautham Menon. He plays the father of three children, a boy and two girl children. Simran plays his wife. This is a story about a physically abused kid and her family. The mindset of the victim and her family are spoken in Vaanmagal. Love Panna Uttranum is directed by Vignesh Shivan. Padam Kumar has twin daughters, played by Anjali. One character is very traditional and the other is just the opposite. The two girls experience different problems and how their ruthless father treats them is the story. Oor Iravu directed by Vetrimaaran is about a girl, who leaves her home for the guy, who loves her. After a couple of years, her father meets her, as she is pregnant. The bonding between them is spoken here.
Kalidas is excellent in his role. His body language, smile, shyness and heartbreak are impressive. Simran did justice to the given character. She is neat and perfect as a mother. Anjali and Kalki did their best. Anjali is a natural actress and it is once again proved. Sai Pallavi is an expressionist. She did the role perfectly and impresses the audience.
Each story has different shades and all of them are quite good. The character selection is perfect. In the story by Vignesh Shivan, people would expect a better climax. With the emotional stories, all the directors attracted the audience. The cinematography is neat and so does the BGM. The characterization is so good in Thangam and Oor Iravu.
What’s Not There?
Although there are minor errors, it need not be zoomed. Overall, the film has some different stories, good direction and neat performances. It is definitely a one-time watch.
