Plot

However, she doesn’t have any love lost for her husband. Balakrishna gets naturally offended and makes things worse at the time of their wedding anniversary. Though the couple moves away from each other, they are not able to erase the memories of each other. Is forgiving possible for Waqima? Watch the movie to find out.

Analysis

And here is a welcoming sign…a female director has helmed direction for this movie. Gitanjali has worked on the elements most seen in her husband’s films; certain aspects that the filmmakers find uneasy to narrate. This movie has certain shades of the Maniratnam classic Mouna Ragam Mouna Ragam is a Tamil soap opera which is a dubbe >> Read More... . But we tend to feel that Malai Neratthu Mayakkam is an exaggerated tale of love. It deals with two contrasting individuals and their tryst with marriage. The movie was taken in a small budget.
Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam can be considered as a coming of age movie. We have seen Selvaraghavan experimenting with his subjects and through this movie he has managed to some extent, deliver what he wanted to convey. He has brought the reality successfully before our eyes. But one wonders why there is so much disgust towards sex in his movies. In fact, this movie has been certified with A certificate.
Selvaraghavan seems to be the ghost director of this movie (however we can see the inputs of a female director in some parts of the movie). There are all the typical elements of his previous films including the look of the Kathir of 7G Rainbow Colony. Well, when will he come out of this circle?

Star Performances

The fresh faces, Balakrishna Kola, and Waqima Gabbi, are indeed a revelation. In fact, most parts of the movie centers on these youngsters and they are assigned a heavy responsibility. And well, they have done a commendable job and for a movie like this, they don’t seem to have any reserves. We get to see the characters of Selva Raghavan’s movies in Balakrishna. He gives the weird look with much aplomb. Wamiqa does what is required of her.

What’s there?

  • The naïve outlook of the husband will strike the right chord with some audiences.
  • Cinematography by Sridhar is quite ok.
  • Amrit, a debut music director, has done a pretty good job with the music and BGM.

What’s not there?

  • The movie is in predictable lines.
  • The tempo of the movie is more of frustration and anger that you tend to long for happiness.
  • The characterization of the lead artists could have been better given the fact that Selvaraghavan is known for giving well-crafted heroes and heroines.
  • Certain scenes are repetitive, and this could have been avoided.

Verdict

The universal appeal of love is told in an exaggerated manner in this movie. A one-time watch movie.
