The film released on 12th December 2014 all over the country. The total production budget of the movie was 110.5 Crore Rupees (16 million US dollars). The Principal Photography shoot of the film occurred in Mysore, but the remaining movie was filmed in the Ramoji Film Studio. The movie earned an estimated sum of 154 Crore Rupees (23 million US Dollars) at the box office.

Plot The story revolves around the dam and a Shiva temple built in the village of Solaiyur. The dam is the lifeline of the village people, which is under the maintenance of the PWD. The dam and the temple were constructed by the Raja Lingeswaran (the role played by Rajnikanth). The dam was strong even after 75 years of its construction, and it could work for further more years. The local MP Nagabhushan (the role played by JagapatiBabu), for his selfish greed, wants to destroy the dam. The dam inspector is killed by Nagabhushan, but before dying the dam inspector throws the pen drive which contains the details of the destruction of the dam and all the evil plans of a Shiva temple which was closed long back. And to obtain the pen drive, the descendant of Raja Lingeswaran can open it.

The TV reporter Lakshmi (the role played by Anushka Shetty) finds out the descendant of the Raja Lingeswaran named Lingaa (the role played by Rajnikanth). Lingaa is Raja Lingeswaran's grandson, a miserable thief, and his family have a hard living. He refuses to accept her offer because of his bitterness against his grandfather. His grandfather spent all the possessions over the establishment of the dam and temple leaving them in this poor condition. Lingaa agrees to the offer of Lakshmi when she finds that he was accused of robbery and was getting caught. After reaching Solaiyur, Lingaa finds out that the statue of the Lingam is made from a very precious Emerald. He tries to steal the stone at night, but the dam security officer calls all the village people and authorities. When they reach the temple, Lingaa starts preaching the Lingam and everyone's gets satisfied by his act of performing the preaching. They interpret this act as auspicious because it was the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Lingaa was told the story of his grandfather's sacrifice for the well-being of the villagers. The British people opposed the construction of the dam, but Raja Lingeswaran spent all his possessions for the work. The British people spread the rumor that Raja will be lending all the land to British once the construction is done. The villagers threw Raja out of the village. He lived with his wife (Sonakshi Sinha) in poverty in a small village. After the realization of their mistake, the villagers went to Raja and apologized. But Raja did not come back, and the villagers closed the temple until Raja or his descendant opens it. Lingaa and Lakshmi are now in love and plan to expose the evil intentions of Nagabhushan. Lingaa determines to be a good person and returns back to the village.

Analysis: Though the star cast of the movie was very famous, Lingaa did not receive much appreciation from the critics. It was an average film. The film was unable to recover the huge investments made in the marketing and distribution. The critics commented that the film was bearable just because of the presence of the superstar Rajnikant.

Star performances: Rajnikant tried to lift up the storyline of the film. The film was not good, and the story was very weak and slow. The aura of Rajnikant was not enough to gain appraisal and make it super hit at box office. The acting of Rajnikant was great according to his personality. The acting and dialogue delivery of other actors were not satisfactory. The actress also tried to lift the bar of the film and strengthen the story line. Everything else in the movie was just satisfactory.

Verdict: The end of the film was boring and long stretched. Despite all these criticism, Lingaa earned the largest amount of money on the very first day of its release.
