Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru is a neo-noir crime thriller film written and directed by Karthick Naren. The film was originally released in Tamil, with the name “Duruvangal Pathinaaru,” and dubbed in Telugu and released, with the name “ 16 - every detail counts.” In 2019, the film was dubbed in Hindi and released with the name “D-16”. The film is shot by Sujith Sarang and edited by Sreejith Sarang. The film is a production of Knight Nostalgia Filmotainment.
The story revolves around Deepak, a police officer, who was forced to retire due to an injury in a 5-year-old on field case. The film begins with Deepak retelling the story of the 5 year old case to an aspiring cop. His narration begins with the introduction of three young men - Mano, Fabian and Melvin, who had unintentionally hit a man on a rainy night and got involved his murder. The story then switches to Deepak’s perspective of his investigation alongside his comrade Gautham. The narratives intensifies as more characters get revealed and the audience gets to know, this isn’t just a story about one unintentional murder but about a couple of murders and a missing individual. The story reveals that all of these incidents take place on the same rainy night along with dropping several hidden hints. What actually went down on this rainy night? Will Deepak and Gautham be able to make connections in the hidden hints and find the final culprit?
Unlike most films, this film makes use of actors who are either not well known or have always played a side role. The film deals with how well even side actors can play out major roles while taking care of the film single handedly.
The film is what someone would call a “Well-made film,” that makes complete use of filmmaking techniques as an aid to the intense story line. The main essence of the film is that it is created as if it was a novel. The filmmaker begins to drop hints right from the beginning. The very first hint of the hint is the name “D-16,” that tell us that the film is going to involve a total of 16 characters who all delve into extreme situations. Furthermore, the film leaves an impact with the beautiful coordination between in the crew for the making of the film. The cherry on the top, is the use of the neo-noir genre in the storytelling.
