Coolie No 1 is a romantic comedy film scripted and directed by David Dhawan. The film is produced by Vasu Bhagnani. This is nothing than the remake of a film of the same name released in 1995, directed by David Dhawan, featuring “Govinda” and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles. The 2020 movie has Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan replacing the veterans. Paresh Rawal, Javed Jaffrey, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Sahil Vaid, Shika Talsania, Manoj Joshi, Vikas Verma, Anil Dhawan, Rajat Rawail, Bharati Achrekar, Shashi Kiran and Rakesh Bedi in the supporting roles. The BGM is by Salim and Sulaiman and the songs are by Tanishk Bagchi, Lijo George, DJ Chetas, Javed, Mohsin, Sulaiman and Salim. “Ravi K Chandran” cranked the camera and Ritesh Soni edited the film.
Raju is a coolie. He got to see the picture of Sarah and at that moment he fell in love with her. Pandit Jai Kishen already had a plan to take revenge on Sarah’s father, Jeffrey Rosario, who insulted him. Rosario is a millionaire. Jai plans to bring Raju as a millionaire from Singapore and get him married to Sarah. Did Rosario fell into the trap? Was Sarah aware of this plan? The answers form the rest of the story.
Varun has done his part okayish. However, he couldn’t overtake Govinda. Sara looks good and her role is a usual heroine role and nothing bigger than that.
When some movies are remade, the makers will make some alterations here and there in the script or screenplay. But, there is no such alteration made. The comedy portions of Johnny work out well and when he is on the screen, laughter is guaranteed. His body language and facial expressions attract the audience. The movie is made on a higher budget, but that doesn’t help it make it to the top. Certain scenes are forcedly inserted for commercial purposes, which is one of the biggest drawbacks of the film.
What’s Not There?
The film has some pluses and minuses. For the people, who hadn’t watched the original version, it might appear new. For those who watched the original, it will definitely be a comparison show.
