Plot

The life of the revered saint Ravidas serves as both the inspiration and the narrative of the movie. Ravidasji was against discrimination and supported the idea that all people are one. The struggles of Ravidasji against the prevalent discrimination in that society and the class and caste systems of that era are shown in the film. The movie also demonstrates his unwavering devotion to Gangaji above all else. There has never been a bhakt like Ravidasji regarding simplicity and dedication to truth.

Star Performance

Sandeep Mohan as the titular saint is entirely believable and disarming. His quiet demeanor has a strange power that’s tough to explain. The supporting characters also play their parts according to the film’s schema.

Analysis

The film does a respectable job of chronicling the life of the great saint. Its heart is in the right place. But good intentions don’t always translate to good cinema. The film is devoid of any style or directorial flourishes. The camera merely records whatever action is taking place. The images and band lack any sort of texture. The character is the priority here. The screenplay can’t help but feel a little preachy and simplistic at times, as though it is trying to spoon-feed lessons in morality to the audience. The writing plays on binaries. The world is divided into good and evil, black and white. There isn’t much nuance to be found here. The film goes for sanitized melodrama and, within that schema, succeeds quite decently. The film is aware of its modest ambitions and isn’t aiming for anything beyond that. It knows what it is. So, it might be a little underwhelming when looked at from a purely cinematic point-of-view, but the film doesn’t have any pretensions either. The screenplay, the acting, the music, and the images are all working towards achieving a single goal: giving an account of the life and struggles of a leader essentially forgotten by the contemporary crowd.

What’s There?

• A respectable chronicle of the life of a mostly forgotten man

• Social commentary is on point

• Admirable intent

What’s Not There?

• The film lacks a nuanced screenplay with depth and subtlety

• Images are bland and lack texture

• The dramatic mode can sometimes feel like a disservice to the subject at hand

Verdict

Whether or not you enjoy this film will depend entirely upon what particulars you look for in a movie. If you’re much more cinematically inclined and can look past the positive intent of the film, this might not be the proper film for you, and it would be better to skip it. But if you are looking for a detailed and harmless historical account of a great life and don’t mind cinematic preaching,  you should probably give this film a shot.
