King Richard is a biographical sports film scripted by Zach Baylin and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. Tim White, Trevor White, and Will Smith produced the film. Robert Elswit cranked the camera, and editing is by Pamela Martin. Kris Bowers composed the music. The movie features Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal.
Richard Williams is a security guard and is married to Brandy, a divorcee with three daughters. Richard and Brandy give birth to two daughters, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Before their birth, Richard dreamed of making his children tennis players. Richard and Brandy started training their daughters when they were small. Once, he takes his girls to Paul, who coached Pete Sampras and John McEnroe. Though Paul is attracted to the girls’ playing mode, he cannot offer free classes but takes Venus as his disciple. Serena continued practicing with her mom. Later, she entered the same tournament, where her sister was qualified to play. After seeing both of his daughters’ success, Richard was proud and happy. But, he feared that his daughters might be misused and get them out of the junior circuit, even after a warning from Paul, who said that this decision would spoil the girls’ future. What happens next? Who coached the girls? How did they shine in their game? All these questions are answered in the rest of the film.
We all know that Will Smith is an excellent performer. He is stunning with his emotional performance, and Aunjanue Ellis supported him well with her natural performance.
Before analyzing the story, we should know what Serena has said about this film. She mentioned clearly that the biopic has dealt with right about her father’s part. A man from a non-sports background and a meager income has put all his efforts into making his daughters tennis champions. This is not a story, but the real incident that makes us feel proud of Richard Williams, who we can see through Will Smith. A perfect casting makes the movie a must-watch! In many scenes, Will smith has excelled well, especially in the scene where he was in a dilemma whether to connect with the high-profile agents or not. His bonding towards his daughters is also shown well. The BGM gels well with the story. The visuals are fantastic, and the match scenes are shot neatly.
What’s Not There?
Unlike other biographical sports movies, this film deals with the efforts taken by a father to make his girls reach a peak. King Richard – makes us develop respect towards Richard Williams!
