Plot

CRISPR is the biggest tech revolution of the 21st century, but it isn't digital. Its biological nature gives us control over the basic building blocks of life. It not only cures diseases and shapes the biosphere, but also helps in designing our children. The film exposes the far-reaching implications of CRISPR through the eyes of the scientists who discovered it and the process of testing its limits. How will this unprecedented revolution change our relationship with nature? What will it mean for the progress of human evolution? To answer these questions, we must look back at the billions of years of our past to peer into our bleak future.

Star Performance

The film, falling under the documentary genre does not allow much room for theatrical prowess to shine through. Given the limitations and given the fact that the leads are real life scientists, they do a good job of taking us on this enlightening adventure. Credit needs to be given to Adam Bolt for his brilliant direction and for bringing this vision to life.

Analysis

Human Nature tells us the story of CRISPR, where genome engineering is shown with a fascinating mix of knowledge and emotion. It encompasses two competing emotions, excitement and unease, making it a pretty fascinating documentary. The promise and perils of CRISPR are woven into a beautiful, co-dependant double helix. The film makes you question if the human race is playing GOD and the direct consequences of doing so. What about nature, evolution, and human advancement? These questions will make you think in this lucid but thoroughly captivating film. Adam Bolt does a spectacular job of making the film educational and shows us the real, true power of science.

What's There?

  • Elucidative storytelling.
  • Roller Coaster of emotions.
  • Beautifully shot, scored, and edited piece.
  • Ending credits include a section for “cute kids.”

What's Not There?

  • It’s a documentary, so there is a lack of fun settings or definitive illustration of the technology.

Verdict

A well-balanced film that covers two distinct emotions, in an easy-to-grasp manner. It is informative and entertaining for those who love to peer into the future. It is a must-watch film.
